My Dad loved the garand too, about the only issued weapon he cared for. His basic training instructor on the 1911 told them that if they missed the bbl link during re-assembly the slide would fly off the back and through their eye socket when fired. Never trusted one after that, he was a revolver guy all his life. Made up a double shoulder holster rig and carried two S&W .38s when he needed to be armed but he always had a Garand in the truck he worked out of. Said Halftrack also had a captured german 20mm aircraft autocannon rigged up on top, he liked that one too!
Those original folding stock paratrooper Carbines are getting salty these days. Hell, I remember an old Spiegel catalog from the mid 60s back when they sold guns mail order, plain M1 Carbines were about $60 and the paratroopers were about $10 more.
My uncle loved the Garand, he retired from the Army as a Master Sargent, served from 1930's to 1950's including combat duty in China-Burma during WWII. May he rest in peace, I miss him.
