The shooter was killed and apparently had two guns, a person with knowledge of the shooting told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was still under way.
Connecticut elementary school shooting
It wasn't clear how many people were injured at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown. CBS Hartford affiliate WFSB-TV reports around 600 students attend the school.
Connecticut State Police spokesman Lt. Paul Vance described the situation to CBS New York station WCBS-AM as a "very serious school shooting."
A dispatcher at the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps said a teacher had been shot in the foot and taken to Danbury Hospital.
Stephen Delgiadice said his 8-year-old daughter heard two big bangs and teachers told her to get in a corner. His daughter was fine.
"It's alarming, especially in Newtown, Connecticut, which we always thought was the safest place in America," he said.
Lisa Bailey, a Newtown resident with three children in Newtown schools, told CBSNewYork.com, "Newtown is a quiet town. I'd never expect this to happen here. It's so scary. Your kids are not safe anywhere."
The superintendent's office said the district had locked down schools in Newtown, about 60 miles northeast of New York City. Schools in neighboring towns also were locked down as a precaution.
State police said Newtown police called them around 9:40 a.m.
A photo posted by The Newtown Bee newspaper showed a group of young students — some crying, others looking visibly frightened — being escorted by adults through a parking lot in a line, hands on each other's shoulders.
Students were taken to a nearby firehouse to be reunited with their parents, CBSNewYork.com reports.

Shortly after 9:40 a.m., police reported that a shooter was in the main office of the school. A person in one room had “numerous gunshot wounds,” police said.
Groups of students — some crying, some holding hands — were being escorted away from the school by their teachers.
A staging area was set up at the Sandy Hook Fire Department, directly in front of the school.
One child leaving the school told the Courant that there was shattered glass everywhere.

An official with knowledge of the situation said the man, described as in his 20's, had two guns. The motive is not yet known.
Earlier reports of a second gunman are unconfirmed. The Connecticut Post reports that police are also questioning a handcuffed man in connection with the shooting. Witnesses told the newspaper he was led out of the woods by officers.

"She was in a small class -- a reading group and they started hearing bangs," Procaccini said. "Her teacher, and I’m grateful for this, rushed kids into the bathroom and locked the door. They told kids it was hammering and tried to keep them calm.”
"Children were crying," Procaccini said. "She did tell me about a little boy that was in a police officer’s arms, bleeding. I don’t know if she gets it."
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said two firearms were recovered from the scene.

And if one Faculty member had been carrying concealed rather than this bullshit of "gun free zones" it could have been an entirely different story.....I notice none of these dirtbags are pulling this shit in my neck of the woods......Georgia........everyone I know carrys.....most concealed...but some not....and I notice people printing all the time.....
We know what's coming. The anti-gunners like Mikey Bloomberg and others are going ape shit over this and calls are being made for Barack to push for more restrictions as they push for more "gun control". Where's Bob Costas?
I just added a few more crates of ammo and another AK-74 clone. May be adding more this afternoon but I suspect that firearms and ammo will be flying off the shelves again. I heard a couple talking heads on TV talking about gun control. This will push sales higher of course.
