10 gun-related bills filed on first day of new Congress

WASHINGTON — Ten bills dealing with gun control were among the first introduced in the 113th Congress, according to a review of documents filed on the first day of the session.

All but two of the measures introduced by House lawmakers on Thursday advocated for more restrictions on firearms and were introduced by Democrats.

Freshman Republican Reps. Steve Stockman of Texas and Thomas Massie of Kentucky introduced bills to implement plans closer to that of the National Rifle Association, calling for the removal of "gun-free school zones."

Gun-regulation opponents have argued that trained armed staff or security personnel could prevent future school shootings like the one that killed 26 at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

"Gun-free school zones are ineffective. They make people less safe by inviting criminals into target-rich, no-risk environments," Massie said in a statement. "Gun-free zones prevent law-abiding citizens from protecting themselves, and create vulnerable populations that are targeted by criminals."

The Massie release noted the bill was first introduced by former presidential candidate and retired Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, in 2007.

The remaining eight bills advocate more restrictions and tougher laws for those who sell, own or want to own firearms.

Rep. Jim Moran, D-Va., introduced a bill with five reforms "supported by at least 63% of NRA members," according to a release. Those provisions include background checks for every gun purchase and gun shop employees, prohibiting people on the terrorist watch list from buying firearms, requiring gun owners to report if their gun is lost or stolen and establishing minimum standards for conceal-carry permits.

Illinois Democrat Rep. Bobby Rush's bill would regulate gun licensing and records of their sale, and the bill by Rep. David Cicilline, D-R.I., would restrict the operations of gun sellers who have had their license revoked or had their renewal denied.

Texas Democratic Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee's bill would raise the age to own a handgun to 21 and implement other age-related restrictions.

Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, D-N.Y., reintroduced her package of bills that also includes language to strengthen background checks, bans on high-capacity magazine clips and Internet purchases of ammunition.

Several of these bills are expected to have Senate versions introduced later this month.

Black Blade: A common political ploy is to overwhelm Congress with legislation in hopes of wearing down the opposition and getting some concessions. This mass filing of anti-gun bills is how they plan to pass more gun control legislation (possibly combined with a large number of executive orders in coming days). The Republicans will very likely fold like a cheap suit as they have on every issue so far during the Obama administration. If you aren't prepped by now it's probably too late as no inventory exists anywhere at any vendor except at very high prices.
