Colorado Gov. Hickenlooper signs landmark gun-control bills

Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, left, serving as moderator in a debate on gun violence hosted by CELL, the Counterterrorism Education Learning Lab, listens as University of Colorado law professor and panelist David Kopel speaks against gun control legislation in Denver, Tuesday Feb. 19, 2013.
By Matthew DeLuca, Staff Writer, NBC News

Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper signed landmark new gun laws on Wednesday expanding background checks on gun purchases and limiting the size of ammunition magazines, placing the traditionally firearm-friendly state among the handful to pass new restrictions in the wake of the shooting in Newtown, Conn.

Eric Brown, a spokesperson for the governor, confirmed that Hickenlooper had signed the bills in an email to NBC News.

Republicans put up stiff resistance to the bills, arguing that the measures would not be effective in preventing future mass killings. Some Colorado sheriffs said before the governor signed the bills that they do not plan to enforce new gun-control laws in their districts, according to the Denver Post.

“Why put the effort into enforcing a law that is unenforceable?” Weld County Sheriff John Cooke told the Colorado paper on Monday. “With all of the other crimes that are going on, I don’t have the manpower, the resources or the desire to enforce laws like that.”

The measures also met resistance from magazine-maker Magpul Industries, which said that it would desert its plant about 30 miles from Denver if the proposed magazine limits became law.

Legislators who had opposed new laws restricting gun ownership said on Wednesday the new gun bills may have electoral consequences for state Democrats.

“We’re all in shock here,” state Senator Greg Brophy, a Republican, said on Wednesday. “It turns out this guy who everybody thought was a moderate Democrat is actually a gun-control governor.”

“I think the governor will be replaced by someone who has Colorado values instead of New York City values,” Brophy said. “If Republicans are returned to control we will repeal these bills immediately.”

Sheriff summed it up right there.. These are feel good mean nothing laws..
Everyday law after law after law.. For Gods sake nobody can follow the damn laws.. Law enforcement, courts, general public, total confusion is being created.

Yup this election could get hairy. Just look back at 1996 after the AWB 2 years prior. The ruling party usually gets hammerd during mid term elections especially if they are pulling stupid crap like this. Well this just goes to show you can always trust a Democrap to knee jerk whenever they have a chance to make you "think" you are safer and take away peoples' rights in the same breath.

The governor will be a good addition to unemployment recipients in the near future. He could probably go run for office in California or New York... Not Chicago though... he looks like he can read, they wouldn't like him there.

The gun control people want to build a fence around gun owners. By not enforcing the laws the alarm is small. Then when all is ready ( Martial law? President Obama issued over 144 executive orders, many dealing with martial law) close the gate. A crafty plan.

The only remedy I can see to this out of control problem , other than the NRA and all the Pro -Gun Right advocates. is to keep track of the up and commers in easvj state, those that are progun and those that are not. I understand that bandwithdth on the net is a problem, maybe we could find a way to put up a page eathier her on this fourm or place one elsewhere that will link to this site. and it would have t odo with those thqat are for and against the 2nd amendment. the onle that are against will definatily be a guide for those to follow politicans who are for our rights and the ones whom are against them and attempting to ban firearms, will be all there in black and white for all to see.And for those whom are against the rights of the people, such as schumer, frankenstine of cali, boxer and soforth. lets us shut them down before the next election
even starts. If we and I say this only due to the fact that we can be almost considered an enemy of the state. What these elected officeal seem to realize is that they work for us ,,not the other way around. and its time that these politicans get schooled, on who put them in office and who can put them out of office. And just another idea to shut out the so called wannbe Presidents,, have a bill drafted that if you decide to run for a higher office, you relinquish your currently held public office, So if you loose omn a run for president you cannot go back to your old job, As an average citizan for the most part you cant leave your employer to go to another job , and get fired or you resign for whatever reason, you just cant get your old job back. ( In some cases the former employer will take the employee back because there an asset to the company, But in politics I dont see that as an assett. and if this could be passed you would see a major drop in the average incompentaints not seeking a higher office espically when they cant even run thier own state correctly!...Doc
