Default AKs on Deep Space 9

Deep Space 9, season 3, episode 12 - they run into some police while visiting Earth in the year 2024. The cops are carrying AKs with boxy bullpup bodies and foregrips, no magazines.

It's interesting how much ex-Soviet hardware shows up in old SF series and films, like the PKM in Screamers 2...

I remember this episode, where Cmdr Sisko and Dr. Bashir end up in that prison city and Sisko has to take the place of the dead activist ?

Think I might fire up Netflix and catch some DS9 now... lol.

Well, you can't argue with the functionality of the AK design. Could probably function with lunar regolith in the action. Silicone grease/lubricants being a must here.

The USAF experimented with shooting 1911s in vacuum. With proper lubrication everything worked fine.

Some of the earliest Soviet manned missions carried an AK, though later they went to a custom-designed rifle. The Soviets usually hard-landed in Siberia instead of dropping in the ocean like we did, and some of the country was pretty wild. Apparently someone felt that having cosmonauts eaten by wolves was a possibility...
