    The story I heard is someone bought a lot of cans that still had stuff in them. As a result, all cans destined for auction had the lids removed to prove they were empty. They are then stacked on a pallet and steel banded down. Tightening the steel bands across the unsupported open box tops crushes them, and being open water gets inside. Dunno if the lids are sold separately, or just on the bottom of the box stack on the pallet.

    you miss read what i wrote

    all the cans came with lids, the interiors are clean and dry

    ONE (1) can had a rust hole in the bottom, I will removed the lid from that can and place on a topless can I have had for years that never had a LID

    below is a picture of what krink is talking about

    again ALL the cans had LIDS with good gaskets and clean interiors

    I bought 10 and 9 were lightly rusted on top and 1 painted white with 1040 blanks written on it.
