Default you can have 1 rifle to store...

the economy is near collapse. you decide it would be smart to have a few supplies off site. you want to keep your burrial container with the firearm you need, as well as a few other supplies in case you need to bug out. you want to keep it cheap (about $200), just in case someone decides to loot your stash. which rifle(or carbine) are you going to place into the container?

    For $200 I would go with the russian 7.62x54R bolt gun & a 440rd tin,or two.

I picked the shotty but also agree with the Mosin, most likely an M38 or M44. But I would stash it and the ammo seperately, a little bit apart from each other, it would take you a few moments longer to get both but the chances of someone else getting both would be reduced.

    My AKM.

If I can't hit it with that, I'm not hungry enough.

    Post .22 Mag.

Like Fritz says I would go with the .22 but I would like it in a Magnum.
Good for game and Zombies and you can also keep a lot of rounds on hand with ease.
I just hate cleaning those damn .22s. Seems like no matter how many times you run the patch through they keep coming out dirty.

A 12 ga shotgun is about as "utilitarian" of a gun as I can think of. Hunting, self defense-raw power and easy to find ammo for. Cheap, too.
Easily modified in a survival situation(sawing of the barrel and stock) for concealment.
Depending on the shells that are kept, you can also use this to nab some small game(#8 shot-birds, pigeons, rabbits, squirrels, etc.
A .22 rifle is tied as a sirvival weapon-ULTRA accurate, small, lightweight-much quieter than a shotty and can be used in a defensive situation-perhaps not as effectively as a high power or a shotty, but if you have concealment and cover-headshots with this rifle will put a man down fast.
Not to mention that a person can prob carry enough ammo to last them for several months(or untill the humidity ruins it) due to their small size and light weight

If hunting were the primary purpose, with self defense a secondary consideration, I would get one of those Rossi "matched pair" with the .22 bbl and a shotgun bbl. With a brick of .22 and an assortment of slugs and shot it will kill just about any edible critter in my neck of the woods.
