I chose 45 in acp or colt.
40 short and weak
what is the best all around pistol caliber?
in this poll we have only center-fire calibers to be used for home defense, military and police type work with survival uses secondary--but an important secondary consideration.
this poll includes wheel-gun and automatic pistol calibers it excludes some rounds that many would consider great but are more limited to re-loaders like 10mm, 357sig,9x23, 9x25 and so on.
this poll is not for exotic loads , like p+, cor-bon, buffalo bore, double-tap and so on.
were talking strictly common off the shelf stuff in FMJ and JHP- federal and the like. stuff you can buy in bulk lots for reasonable prices.
you can pick more than one favorite as well.
I chose 45 in acp or colt.
SOON-We already lost the war. You are the resistance.
I chose .357 mag, but then actually read your post that excludes survival type situations... oops. 9mm is hard to beat for cops and military.

I like 7.62X25
guys look at the energy of a 7.62X25....... the "bad guy" better have ceramic plates in his vest, kevlar alone is not going to stop it.
45 is like throwing a rock HAHAHA big heavy but stops at the vest.
every time I bring 7.62X25 to the range someone picks up an empty case and starts a conversation "what is this"
my first pick 7.62X25 fits all the criteria, cheap, powerfull, fun to shoot,
check it out!!!
I am off the page for extended times due to job requirements, not gone forever
Gotta say 10 just because, but if I was "in the shit" I'd want a 9x19 for ammo availability and lighter recoil.
45 all the way.
Your in my Mind, and in my Sights
I find invariably no matter what I am doing I pick up a .38 or a .357 ... just damn hard to beat the caliber. I carry my .44 mag once in a while and smaller guns for CCW, but overall, the .38/.357 wins hands down overall.

A lot of those calibers have there good points and a few aren't worth trying
I agree with HotBarrel, the 7.62x25 doesn't get the respect it should, someone needs to make a modern pistol for this caliber.
Second choice is the 357

For all around I like 45, I carry a 9x18 pa-63 daily though and most likely would use that to get me to a rifle.
