    Default Saiga conversion question?

Can anyone tell me if a Saiga 7.62x39 can be easily converted to use standard AK mags? I've heard about making bullet guides but don't know any more than that. A friend told me Saiga's have a proprietary mag that sells for about $70. Any advice would really be appreciated.

Yes, a bullet guide and a small modification to the mag catch and you can use surplus AK mags.

You will, of course, have to add US parts to the rifle for 922r compliance when using high capacity mags.

Thanks for the answer nalioth. I'm assuming a 7.62x39 Bulgarian bullet guide from K-VAR will work (and of course compliance parts, like you mentioned). Is it just a matter of a little grinding on the mag catch?

$70? I don't think so. Search around here and look at that link, you'll be able to find enough to figure out it is a relatively simple matter to "upgrade" the Saiga.

http://forum.saiga-12.com is also a fount of knowledge on Saigas.

I think you'd be better off buying a bullet guide from Dinzag over there. He makes them specifically for Saigas. The ones at k-var are for replacing the military issue guides.

Go with the bullet guide, and depending on your trunnion, a piece of pipe should work. I'm going to try this myself

Yes the pipe works great. So do the K-Var guides... remember these are basically "stripped" military rifles Bottom line, any bullet guide you get will work. "Just Do It". Oh and we want to see pics of the finished product!!!

That just saves you from buying a bullet guide. Not the cost (bullet guides cost less than half the price of that magazine), but the hassle of drilling a hole.

He'll still have to make the rifle 922r compliant to use that mag.

Buying a bullet guide for ~$25 allows him to use any milsurp AK mag he likes (which can be had cheaply), so long as his rifle is 922r compliant.
