An OTS-48K replica would be nice, but I would do it to a "basic" 91/30

There'll be no restoration. Mosins are like cockroaches. First there's one, then two, and then they're all over the place.

    Something more challenging ???
How about building the carbine into a shortie Charlton copy ??? The original Charlton was an auto rifle then an LMG made in WW-II from early .303 Enfield bolt action rifles (SMLE's).

You might adapt the 7.62x54R Finnish Saloranta mag for that banana effect. This is a project for the dedicated artiste.

Nah, if the Charlton was any uglier all you'd have to do is wave it at someone and then walk up and kick them while they were unconscious. If I do any work on a semiauto I need to be finishing up the roller-lock .303.

A Hungarian carbine is nothing special, and by the time I bought a stock and paid shipping I'd have as much into it as it would take to just buy one.

I have three other milsurps going - a Ross in a 6.5 wildcat, with a blue laminate thumbhole stock, an SMLE carbine in .45-70, and a fairly ordinary P17 I plan to rechamber to .30 Gibbs, unless I just leave it alone and tell people it's chambered in ".30 Whelen." I also have one of the nice J&G 91/30 Mosins.

What can I do with a spare Mosin action that one of my other rifles won't already do? It has a nice sharply rifled barrel, and I'm pretty fond of the 54R, so I'm not much interested in a caliber conversion. I could put a nice American-style stock on it, but it'd look really strange with the sidefolder bayonet. I admit, I'm quite taken with that bayonet. If any paper targets attack me, I'll slice them to ribbons...

    Why not .30/40 Krag?

Given the price of .311 barrels going from 54R, .303, or 7.7 to .30 caliber is very attractive. The Krag is similar enough to the 54R that you should need few if any magazine modifications.

I just did a quick search and found new .30/40 brass for $22 per 50. WTF, that's cheaper than .303, last time I checked!

Some pictures to get your creative juices flowing:

I was sort of thinking about something like the bottom rifle, with a Lahti mag, AK underfolder or sidefolder stock, and a PPsh style barrel shroud...

A bullpup hand made stock, a nice scope, and a bipod. Simple, compact, understated, and utilitarian.

    trx,
the x54 is so close to a .308 it is not funny, but to covert one over would be a not fun looking at the mag. the 30/40 would/could give the same problem. muttman
