    Default Source for blasting media?

I have one Harbor Freight in town and they only have glass beads. I really thought I'd seen media at Home Depot, but can't find any. What shops would carry it? Welding supply?

The best price I get on silica sand is from a grave monument carver.
The aluminum oxide I have to order from MSC & the shipping is as much as the media.

Try a masonry supply store. They carry silica sand for sandblasting. I use 70 mesh silica sand for parkerizing and duracoat. it typically runs less than $6.00/100lbs

I use 120 aluminum oxide for parking. Sand for car & tractor parts, etc. I've found a lot of things to blast since I got the cabinet.

BTW: the silica sand dust is nasty on your lungs I've read. I wear a respirator.
But then I wash my hands with gasoline so. I'm not sure what will kill me first.

There isn't a blast media that isn't bad for you - they can all lead to Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), or Cancer.

Black lung is COPD caused by coal dust

White lung is COPD caused by cotton (cellulose) dust

Silicosis is COPD caused by silica

Those are the "big three" in COPD, they get their own name, but COPD is COPD and is not good. COPD occurs when you breath in stuff your body can't eliminate. It accumulates in the lungs until you have a problem.

Asbestosis leads to cancer, and is caused by exposure to short fiber asbestos. Exposure to long fiber asbestos is relatively safe in comparison. So, there's even types of exposure to the same chemical or mineral that count. Don't think that anything we put through a blaster is safe:

Glass beads contain silicon dioxide, just like sand.

Aluminum Oxide is a particulate that, like silica, your body can't eliminate. So it accumulates in the lungs and leads to, yup, COPD.

Rice, corn cob, walnut shells - all contain cellulose. Just like cotton.

Particulate masks are important. I wouldn't get all in a big tizzy over this (in fact, I often use silica blasting without protection of any kind), but don't think any media is "safe" or safer than another. They're not.

maby I am craze BUT I buy "play sand" at wally world for $2 in a 40 pound bag. this is good for most of the blasting I do. I do not mind it spread around the yard as much as black beauty. maby still not good for the lungs....
I have glass bead too but I do not use it too much.

I tend to agree with above post. prety much ANYTHING in the air is BAD!!! to breath.
I am off the page for extended times due to job requirements, not gone forever
