I picked up a $25 steady-rest from LMS and it has greatly enhanced the work I can do with long rods and tubes like operating rods, barrels, etc.

I'm looking seriously at the difference between the little 7x10 (actually 7x7 ) and the 9x20, and the through-spindle bore diameter doesn't do anything for me. I'd like to have 1.5" through-spindle size but to get that I have to go to at least $2k. Not likely for the forseeable future. Maybe next Winter when I don't have as much work to do on my sailboat...

The steady rest is a must on longer work. Quit working on the boat for a while and buy yourself a bigger lathe that can handle reverse metric threads. You will not regret it, but your pocket book will be shambles for a while. Also, your back from moving and setting up the monster. Ask me how I know.....
