At the time, the M1 Garand was the finest battle rifle. But it had some flaws (lack of separate already-loaded magazines, couldn't be recharged if 6 of 8 shots had been fired) that I think the M-14 corrected. It's hard to argue with it's battle record, and it certainly was (is in my gunsafe) a fine rifle but I wouldn't say it was the best of all-time.

I have to agree that between the M1 Garand and the FAL you have the best in battle rifles. My idea of the best battle rifle would be to combine their advantages. The FN-49 in 30-06 would probably do just that, but I do like the rotating bolt of the Garand too.

I'm attaching a picture of a device that allows an instructor to see the sight picture that a Garand shooter is looking at. Anybody know the technical name for it or where to get more of these?

    Thanks for your input!

Years ago Springfield Armory Inc. used to sell them. For the life of me I can't think of when the last time I saw one of those for sale was, whether in ads or ebay. I would have to find my M1 Garand TM to tell you the military name for it, but I think it was a "coach's sight".

I have a National Ordnance M1 from 1943 and I would say it is one of the best rifles ever made. I also have shot the M14 and it too is one of the best. That 30.06 and 7.62x51 are very good rounds for definetly reachin out and touchin something. Overall rating for myself personally, I love mine and wouldn't part with em for nothing. Surplus ammo is cheap. And the range of ammo is great, Armor Piercing, Tracer, FMJ, Incinderary. Thanks, Terry...

Recently joined a club and got to put 60+ rounds thru an M1 at 200 yds. If you've never done it, TRY IT! You can definitely "reach out and touch someone."

The garand is a wonderful weapon but I put my money on the M1A/14.Have had one since 78' and used one in,well over seas and other places..Never had a problem, always fired and ya can put on different optics.Just a viable weapon and trusted with my life.Maybe I'm partial, but I've shot just about all and always come back to it.

Gotta throw in my 00.2 cents worth, I'd go with the M1 - For a gun that was put into production over 70 years ago - it can still do the job today. And besides, When we used the M1 - We never lost a War or ended up in a stalemate.
