    Default Semiautomatic 8mm mauser options?

A good buddy of mine has a FN 49, and he was incredibly optimistic at the time of purchase, but later found that his luck with surplus crap ammo wasn't what he had hoped for.

With modern factory ammo, the rifle cycles absolutely perfectly. It is in good working order but that is not the issue here.

He is looking for a semiautomatic rifle that will cycle the crappiest of surplus 8mm ammo. Other than the G43 and the FN, I am not aware of many weapons out there in this category.

What is out there that fits the bill of a reliable semiauto s*** ammo eating 8mm?

I have a Hakim that eats most surplus ammo. Stay away from the Turk, loaded too hot. It is the most accurate C&R I've aquired to date.

I've had both an FN49 and a Hakim. I still have the FN49, sold the Hakim years ago (for $150, still kicking myself).

+1 on avoiding Turk ammo. I've had to replace several parts because of that stuff before I learned. My FN49 does pretty well, but does jam on certain types of ammo. I also modified an old BAR mag for it.

The reason I got rid of the Hakim was because it jammed up all the time. At the time I had Israeli and Canadian surplus, and it didn't like either one. I still wish I'd have kept it, though. It was in excellent shape and was a neat rifle.

Used to have an M1 Garand that I had a gunsmith rebarrel to 8MM Mauser. Worked geat but I foolishly it sold to a friend, owed him a couple favors.

Unfortunately the gunsmith who did the work passed away, may he rest in peace he was a good man. Also, the company that machined the barrel blank for me went out of business.

+1 on the Hakim. I also had one and sold it cheap but it didn't fire some of the crap ammo because of the hard primes, my rifle (may have) had a broken firing pin because some times it took two hammer drops to fire the surplus ammo... I think it was from egypt (the ammo I know the rifle was from there) FN -49 are cool guns. I need one... but a 1919A4 will shoot most anything... MG34 Mg 42 will also. B2B

    A+ for the 8mm M76 Yugo. A real good 8mm ammo eater.
