Cephus you might check Inter Ordnace as they had those G3 mags a while back for a dollar if you bought a hundred...........What we did was get a few guys together and split them up.............Thats pretty cheap.......
CFS has mags for 50 for $50 I got one steel for $3.99 just to look at it was very nice condition jungle tape on it though. Sang run hunter I have not rulled out any thing on the mags yet. Galil mags might work also do you have any knowledge about them? Cephus exactly what parts do you need? the mag catch, mag catch lever, spring, bushing or all of it?
Here are the pics, sorry I am late. I had the back of my truck jacked up trying to find out what was making the weird noise. My neighbor came over to see what I was doing and now it looks like my tranny is shot....Oh well, Merry Christmas!
On to the pics! Some are Suomi mag with a 5.45 trunion to show that. Some are my Saiga .308 with M14 mag in place. More details on that when I have it completed. It is mostly done, but need a few things.
Someone just needs to talk Buddy at Tapco into making a 20 round Saiga .308 mag. He could use the same plastic he uses to make his SAW pistol grips from. Maybe add a little some more glass to the mix.
He could sell them at $29.99 each or four for $99 and he would move a ton of them.
I found them a bit cheaper - gunthings.com has new mags for $16 each. A bit easier on the wallet considering what we have planned for them.
I'm still interested in the G3 conversion. I have more interest in destroying a $1.00 mag. If Cephus' tweaks can work I may go with that. I'm Ok with doing extra work to the mags if they can work. $20 total for a bag full of mags makes this project an even sweeter deal!
I pulled the barrel from my old G3 beater parts kit and it is a 22mm trunion Unfortunately, the Yugo is a 23mm trunion, so I am going to play around with that. I'd really rather not use a sleeve and I think I can make it fit by welding a "ridge" to take up the slack. I'm looking at .5mm so that doesn't seem all that bad. I think. If I have to, I'll sleeve it anyway.
The G3 barrel is thinner at all the AK journal sizes so all parts will need to be sleeved. I figured out that a 3/4" gas pipe I have laying around will work great, because it is undersize in the I.D. and oversize on the O.D. A bit of lathe work will do the trick.
The G3 barrel is threaded 15x1mm RH and that means the sleeves won't fit. SO I'm going to have to lathe the threads down and re-thread. I think 1/2"x28mm will work. I'm going to make a muzzle brake out of some steel bar I have laying around.
The G3 barrel pin is in the wrong spot but is smaller than an AK pin. The G3 barrel also needs the extractor notch milled for the AK extractor.
I monkeyed around with the G3 mag and the Yugo trunion tonight. I think it will work, and will need the same kind of grinding that a Weiger mag needs for a Saiga conversion. That, and welding on the rear mounting lug. Cephus, that sound about right to you?
oh so you're adapting tthe G3 magwell? I'm just going to mod the mags to fit the trunion and magwell.
Basically I'm doing the mags like a Saiga conversion but with more fitting and grinding. Those mags are too cheap to ignore... for the cost of one M14 mag, I can have a "full load" of converted G3 mags. I *hate* the idea of proprietary mags, but since I like to load out my mags, that will significantly reduce overall investment costs - 1 mag vs. 10!
Right now I'm looking at this breakout:
- bentmetal yugo shell
- yugo 'dark bore' kit
- home made stock set
- salvage G3 barrel
- home made muzzle brake
- G3 modded mags
I'm doing the US furniture route to save more cash. I figure this will total around $200 TOTAL cost since I'm scrounging half of this stuff.
I would worry quite a bit about sleeving a 308 barrel. The place where the pin puts the most load on the trunnion is right where the sleeve will be. Be careful.
Jerry how do I get pics out of Kodak Easy save and on to my computer so I can post them !! I haven't taken the ones of the rec yet but I can't get the wifes Christmas pics to move so I know I can't get the gun ones to move either!!
Yes, I'm going to sleeve every barrel attachment. I plan to use galvanized gas pipe or something similar. That will be slightly more lathe work, but much cheaper than digging up specialty steel tubing.
and if ya make the gas block in two pieces like the mini14 is ya can do it to fit whatever . I'd use some 4140 for that because it won't have to be heat treated or anything for strength !!
Not sure if I would do that, since the grenade-launching Yugo gas block seems beefy enough for anything I could throw at it. I have some steel bar that is mild steel, but we torched it and quenched it, then it rang like a bell! I can't imagine needing anything like that, but you never know. I'm planning to make a M92 style hinge to attach instead of the rear sight block, and weld that to the top cover. That hinge will give me an anchor to let me weld a Galil- or CZ-2000 style rear sight to the top cover and let it stay zeroed. There are a few other "tricked out sniper rifle" things I'm going to add. Your SKS bullpup got me thinking, and I may --- MAY --- bullpup it like this sucker:
Well let me know if I can help. The newer cameras are supposed to really be "plug and play". At most, you may need to install something from the disk that came with it, but normally you shouldn't because Windows should have everything you need.
I'm going to grind some tabs to affix to the magazine, then I plan to braze them to the mag itself. Tapco has G3 mags "rusty" for $0.75 each!!!! They are alloy mags. Tapco also has "rusty" steel mags for $3 each, and a 50-pack box for $50. I figure I'll pick up enough to have a "carry load" of 10 mags. That will two mag pouches full and a few extra.
Question about alloy G3 mags - those are aluminum, correct? How successful can I expect to be when using a MAPP torch to braze a steel lug onto the aluminum mag body? Should I be worried about burning the aluminum or will the "normal" brazing rod (the thin bronze ones - not the thick silver solder ones) be adequate without damaging the mag???
OR should I go with the steel ones and sell off the rest? If I get all that to work, I could be convinced to do the remaining 40 steel mags for others... or am I being too paranoid about the ability of the MAPP torch to burn the thick aluminum magazine?
I really want to actually see how in the hell you guys are fitting and HK mag into an AK?
If anyone noticed above I had the most common .308 mags for a comparo and found the M14 is a super fit. It fits into the trunion like a factory fit and is the right height to feed rounds. Next would be a modified FAL, if I had to go that route.
Yes, you will have to put a knob or solder a peice of steel to make a catch to fit in the trunion. Since the receiver will be a home build you can make the magwell to fit the shape of the M14 mag and I bet the catch on the M14 mag will fit the t-guard. It comes within 1mm of fitting the mag release on my Saiga .308.
Anyway... Just my thoughts and I am very anxious to see how an HK mag will work too, so I can eat crow I still think those mags are ugly though.
Well I'm about to buy 50 of them so I'll have plenty to show off BUT if it doesn't work, then you can pass that crow my way! :kick:
WELL LOOKIE THERE - Tapco must be surfing these threads because suddenly their "throw away" mags doubled in price from $0.75 to $1.50
Maybe I'll just buy a dozen then. The idea of doing this on the cheap is the only reason I'm doing it. I could buy *NEW* M14 mags and have 3 extra US compliance parts instead of this used crappy German stuff. And for that price, I'll just buy from Cope's - Good to Excellent condition G3 mags are a bit cheaper even!

Trust me! I am curious! And I will eat crow!
Yes, I am sure it's not just us that has driven the price up. I bet they are selling the poop out of those mags! I almost got some, but I have like 20? G3 mags now and 1 G3 rifle. I figure I got enough! Save my money and buy some other stuff I need.
There are a few 308 AK's.Most only have two locking lugs. Some are larger than others.Even the 5.45 AK has larger lugs than 7.62x39.There are Yugo M77,308 Galil.308 Valmet and the Vepr/Saiga.The newer Russian models have three lugs because of the more recent strict European pressure testing. The Russian 308's originally had two lugs but failed the European pressure tests. They were suppose to have work fine with standard ammo though. The Russians went with three lugs to pass the pressure tests so the rifles could be sold in Europe.
Did the m77 or M 76 ever come with a milled Reciver? I spent a good part of last night looking at the differances between my milled and stamped Yugo kits and the stamped has a lot more meat in the truninon around the lug areas than the milled. the milled reciver is aprox .058 thinner on the sides measuring from the lug to the outside of the trunion however the milled lug is longer with more material behind it than the stamped. Im still trying to decide on what kit to do the 308 in. the milled would be easyer to get a G3 mag into since it does not have a riviet in the way. if the M77 was made in a milled reciever I would not worry about it.
The M76 is a milled receiver in 8mm Mauser the M77 is a stamped receiver in 308 Winchester. The M76 has a longer receiver and bigger carrier. The M77 has a standard length receiver and carrier.
How does the mag latch work on a G-3? Does it catch the small dimpled circle on the upper left side of the mag?
