Thanks Pookie. Now, If I used a pre-chambered barrel, let's say a suomi barrel, won't this already be set? I apologize if I'm asking a lot of stupid questions.

Not really. It is the barrel & bolt combination that determines the headspace.
using a prechamber barrel is a good start, but get your self a set of Go/NoGo gauges also.

Thanks. I looked at a suomi barrel versus a AK bolt and I think I understand now. I appreciate all the help.

I'm pretty sure a 9mm headspaces on the case mouth, not like a rifle at all. Soumi kits are just 20.00 for the whole thing 90 with rifle kit purchase), try finding another 9mm barrel for that.

Anyone got a guide for converting an AK to blowback? Some things are either answered above (barrel stuff) or obvious (welding the bolt to carrier) but I'm guessing there's some other voodoo knowledge needed to make this work. For example the spring choice is probably critical here.

Most of the blowback 9mms people have posted just used the stock recoil spring. You don't have to weld the bolt to the carrier, you can modify the rotater track in the carrier to hold the bolt in the unlocked rotary position but hold it in the locked (rearward) position front to back. Makes it easier to get at the pins to strip the bolt. IIRC, you also need to relieve the carrier for ejection, possibly even relocate the cocking handle too.
