    Default -74 mags for a .223

I was looking over may parts the other day and found my rommy bolt carier will fit in a -74 mag (feed lips) but the kvar .223 bolt head will not with out milling of some off the sides. my Q for thoes that have made the conversion (non saiga ) what type of mags are you using .223 or -74, and if-74 what modes did you do. thanks muttman

You will be best served with dedicated .223 magazines.

Weigers, Romanian Weiger knockoffs, Bulgarian .223 waffle mags are all functional.
Converted Ak74 mags don't work well, even with the special follower. The curvature of the 5.45x39 magazine restricts max loading of 5.56x45 to no more than 15 or 20 before binding occurs.

You can see the differences in the below picture.
Far left: Bulgarian 5.56x45 ( .223 Remington ) waffle mag
Far right: Bulgarian 5.45x39 AK74 mag

I have used the 223 Bulgy mags on my 223 conversions. they are not the most consistant in fit however.

Bulgarian .223 mags are known to need fitting in non-Bulgarian Kalashnikovs.

Yea I have 3 10 round bulgys for my 223 varmit build (Tapco flat Opened up slightly) one barely fits one is loose and one just right but the lips were taller than the other two and had to be trimmed.
If i was in the bulgarin military I would damm sure test fit all my mags before going into the field. the price is right but I wish I had steel instead so I could modify them if needed

    They fit Bulgarian AKs perfectly.

It is the other countries AKs or home builds where they need 'fitting'.

You can replace the followers in 5.45 mags to work in .223. Here is a link:PRICE LIST 2001 22 Feb

Just scroll down the price list. I use -74 mags in my Saiga .223.

You can, but you may still have the problem I spoke of above.

I have had no problems with the 74 mags with robarms 223 follower in the VeperII/KTROV3. I did grind the inside of the mag body so the follower will go slightly higher as to help the last round of 223 feed, but that is optional, as they will work well as issued in my testing... B2B
