I have a Hadar II stock coming. Now I have to figure out what to do with it...
The Hadars used milled Galil receivers, angled up in the front. As far as I can tell they were all in .308.
I'll be doing a scratchbuilt sheet metal receiver. Various Valmet models (Galils were licensed Valmets) used stamped receivers. I posted pictures of several of them on the general AK subforum. I'll use .060/.062 4130 stock and thin a spare Romanian trunnion to match, like the thick-receiver Norincos.
Somewhere I saw a picture of a stamped Valmet that showed the weld; they just bent the sides, cut a V, bent the angle, welded, then bent and trimmed the top rails, apparently. With fancy dies they could have just stamped it bent and done the top rails on the next top. Load across the weld is compression due to recoil, so it shouldn't hurt. Lots of .060 thick milled rewelds out there working just fine, too.
I need to see if I can find some of those flat, low-profile rivets some AK variants used. I'll have to clearance the stock to clear the rivets.
I'll probably dispense with the iron sights entirely and used a top cover mounted scope. A side rail won't clear the Hadar stock.
So, I expect to have a nice targetty-looking rifle with a wood stock. Now I'm wavering about what cartridge. .300 Savage or 6.5 Grendel look good so far...
thanks for the pictures It looks like a good start. Id lke to se the grip a little more finished, Id want a push buttion saftey for a stock like that.
what was the price on that one??? I was looking at some of there non pistol grip stocks for a california legal build. some of there seconds would be good practice and the price is right.
The grip *is* a bit blocky as-shipped. I will narrow it over half an inch and deepen the finger grooves; I never liked the fat grip thing, but it seems to be the style now.
With the extra charges for blue, left hand, and shipping, it was $207 to my door, vs. $135 for the basic price.
The Hadar stock, being custom made for an AK, has the pisol grip in the usual position, with a semicircular cutout for the Galil thumb safety. Some of the Molot Veprs had crossbolt safeties; they cut away a big chunk of the stock around the trigger guard for it. You could probably come up with something a lot cleaner.
Since I don't actually have a Galil receiver to use, nor any of the safety parts, I've been considering my options. Easiest, of course, would be to cut a slot and order the Galil bits. On the other hand, I could do something like my MAC-11, which has a slider inside the trigger guard...
Okay. I decided to move the two oldest projects to the top of the queue and make some progress. So I looked around the bench for the receiver... I've been looking for it for going on a week now. Apparently I've put it "in a safe place." That sometimes requires buying a replacement for whatever it was that got put away, because it may not show up for years.
I'm also missing two caulking guns. After six weeks I broke down and bought another, expecting the other two to show up, but they haven't...
Though the 6.5 Grendel is *very* attractive, I decided to build a wildcat. I've been cogitating on it for a year or two now. I have a couple of the $33 Green Mountain .311" barrels, and I'm going to take one and chamber it to what I've been calling ".311 Whisper." I need to come up with another name since SSK is tetchy about their trademark. Anyway, my variant is the same as the .300 Whisper, except instead of shortening the neck before opening it up to .308", I'm going to leave it at full length and open it up to .311". I don't expect any difference in performance; the reasons for the .311 are:
1) will use the same bullets I already cast for the 7.65 Mauser, 7.7 Arisaka, .303 British, and 7.62x54R
2) leaving the neck at full length will cover the all the grease grooves for most of my bullet molds.
A subsonic cartridge and a cast bullet just seem to go together...
I've acquired a bag of .223 brass, some O-1 drill rod to make a chambering and die reamers, and earlier today I bought some 7/8" 4140 round bar to make the loading dies from.
I guess I'll work on the barrel and dies until the receiver gets unhidden...
I'm not planning to use a suppressor. SSK *used to* have a snotload of information on their web site, which they've removed for some reason. According to the missing pages, a .220 or so grain bullet launched at 100fps or so kept most of its velocity at some ridiculous distance, plus accuracy was very good. The claim was that drag was much lower while subsonic, and accuracy wasn't affected by dropping through from supersonic to subsonic.
That's a big question. There's quite a bit of discussion over on quarterbore.com about bullet weight and twist with the .300 Whisper. There are people claiming you need a 1:8 or even tighter twist, and others saying the usual 1:10 works.
Unfortunately, all the .311 barrels I've ever seen, from the AK-47 to the Arisaka, use the same 1:10 twist. Same with the Green Mountain .311 barrels. Of course I could have PacNor cut a custom barrel for $300 or so, but that's not going to happen.
If I can't find a bullet it likes a subsonic, I'll see what happens at supersonic. And if I'm not happy, heck, I'll try something else....
Not to my knowledge. I got mine from a guy who turned his Hadar into a "real Galil!" He turned an exotic variant into something indistinguishable from the zillion other .308 Galils out there... his loss, my gain.
"Hey, we'll take this BOSS 429 Mustang, throw away that weird motor, four speed, and the wing, repaint it, and it'll be close enough to a real two barrel 302 Mustang with an automatic..."
Your best bet is to find a stock from Richard's or Boyd's, make sure it's wide enough to take an AK receiver, and start hogging it out. Some Mauser actions are almost 1-1/2" wide, which means there's plenty of room for a 1-1/4" AK action. "Hunting" stocks are thinner and taper; you want a "target" stock that's fatter around the receiver. You can always remove unwanted wood.
