    I learned that in the boy scouts but we used steel wool and a d cell.

    We used to make home made M80 fire crackers and set them off electrically with a fuse made out of steel wool.

    I always used a 9 volt and steel wool. Still a cool method that a lot of folks wouldn't think of.

    Wonder if it would work with a cell phone battery if one were lost in the woods??

    I am trying to think of a situation where I would have a battery, steel wool and some cotton, but not a pocket butane lighter, a flint stick or a pack of matches. Interesting info though and I will file it away in the brain in case that day shall come. Thanks

    I always used a 9 volt and steel wool.
    That's how I did it a couple times, just tried it after seeing a video to see if it was as easy as the guy made it look.
