I never heat treated my RSP. I have 5k through it, I see no problems. A lot of the 1919 guys and gals have not heat treated either. However, if you want to do it, check and post at 1919a4.com.

Last inch = 43-49Rc. The rest of the plate = 23-28Rc.

As mentioned above it is not mandatory. I did not do mine.

From what I was able to gather from info on the M1919 forum is that the last inch was only hardened to keep the slot from wearing from repeated removal of the rear plate. Not for any strength issue related to firing the weapon.
Also very few of them over there are using hardened plates and I haven't read of any issues.

Another option is to machine your rsp out of prehardened plate. I used 4142 precision ground stock for my rsp (28-32 rc). Carbide tooling is a must when machining this material, but saves having to heat treat your sideplate.

How thick is the original plate, and how thick is the Semi Plate?

Original plate is 0.187" (3/16") - Semiauto rsp starts out as 0.25" (1/4") thick.
Most of the 0.25" plate is machined down to 0.187" leaving a strip down the center. Prints are available for download at semi1919parts.com
