Default Monkey wrench in AR land, 6.8SPC

Anybody have or use a 6.8? My only AR is a post ban Oly with a really crappy barrel. The bore is rough as a corn cob and fouls out in a few shots. I would rather replace it than send it in so why not step it up a bit and get something with some more smack.

I'm thinking of replacing the upper with a 6.8. I already have some brass, dies and suitable powder. Finding an upper is a bit of a challenge. So far it looks like Model 1 Sales or CMMG are the only stores that list them as available. Any comments?

I'll get around to putting a new barrel on the Oly upper one day but it's pretty low on my list of things to do.

SSK lists 18 different calibers for their AR uppers, in everything from .17 Rem to .458 SOCOM.

My father inlaw has a DPMS in 6.8 he seems to like it. The mags are expensive though.

Yes it is but... 6.8 is fatter and you can't load more than a few in a .223 mag. It seems to bulge the sides of the mag and won't fit into the rifle. I looked at some PRI 6.8 mags at a recent show. The ribs in the sides are not as deep giving them a bit more room in width.

How much are 6.8 Ar mags? I've been thinking about doing a 6.8 for a while just never knew where to get any of the parts.

Only difference is the upper?...and now the mag? Anything else?

The bolt is different. I've been told that some use a 7.62x39 bolt because it is close enough. This is a bad thing because the 7.62 bolt is already weaker. A 6.8 bolt has just a tad more meat to it.

Mags are running about $45 right now.

Midway usually has Silver State Armory ammo for 6.8 at a reasonable price. They also have the mags listed in their last flyer from $40-$50. Its a neat idea, but I'll wait till the mags come down in price. I have a 6mmx45 olympic upper that uses standard mags. Neither make for cheap easy plinking though.
