BUFFER TUBE THREADED RING OR BLOCK

IM LOOKING FOR A SOURCE OR PERSON TO THREAD A HEAVEY LOCK RING OR BLOCK WITH A HOLE FOR A BUFFER TUPE TO SCREW INTO FOR A AK ADDAPTER ON A GUN IM HELPING A FRIEND BUILD FOR HIS 11 YEAR OLF KID

DOES ANY ONE KNOW WERE I CAN BUY A STEEL SLEAVE THAT IS THREADED TO TAKE A AR BUFFER TUBE?????

OR DOES ANY ONE HERE HAVE THE TAP AN COULD THREAD ME A COUPLE IF I SENT THEM THE BLOCKS OR RINGS??
I NEED SOME THING WITH A LITTLE MORE THREADS THAN A THE LOCKING RING THAT KEEPS THE TUBE IN PLACE.

I WANT TO MAKE A PISTOL TYPE TRUNION THAT HAS THE PROVISION FOR A BUFFER TUBE. ON MY SONS BUILD I JUST USED A LOCK RING BUT IT WAS HARD TO WELD IN PLACE WITH OUT DISTORTING AN ID LIKE A FEW MORE THREADS ALTHOUGH IM SURE THE TUBE WOULD BREAK BEFORE THE TREADS PULLED OUT.
I SEE THOSE TAPS ARE PRICY AN ID LIKELY NEVER USE IT MUCH.

I AM AWARE OF THE ALREADY MADE STOCK ADDAPTERS BUT IMO THERE CHEASY AN THEY MOUNT THE STOCK TO LOW FOR USE WITH A SCOPE. ALSO I MIGHT TRY TO MAKE A FOLDER SET UP. I HAVE ONE OF THOSE INLINE FOLDER ADAPTERS BUT THEY MAKE THE STOCK REALLY LONG WHEN ADDED. IF THEY WERE STEEL i COULD JUST MILL OFF THE MALE THREADED PART AN WELD IT ON.

ANY WAY LOOKING FOR A SOURCE OF EXTRA LONG RETAINING RINGS OR SOME ONE TO TREAD A FEW HOLES. OR A LINE ON A CHEAP TAP.

have the proper thread tap of the buffer tube and OSI jig, you would have to cut the hole to the perfect dimensions, I could cut the threads

my tap is not a cheap one

the only problem I have is you are using steel, I have only used aluminum 0% DSA and 80% Tannery blanks.

so is it a thin peice of steel I can clamp to my jig and tap the threads if so its possible for me to do. I am out of town right now and on the road so if time is not essential

1biggun, Can you single point thread it on your lathe?
possably but its a lot of work for me. my lathe is a 1932 south bend 9" so im some what limited but I have all the gears. i have never cut internal threads on it.

yea its going to be steel an id hate to have some one mess up a good tap if things didnt work right.

I have been looking at the ACE pig nose addapters for aboout $20 an may be able to make one of them work. I cant find ay were if there steel or aluminum. I was just hoping some one made a nut or some thing that was thicker. so I clould just weld it to a home made pistol trunion.

im going to have to some research. is that thread only used on the AR 15 an m16 recivers is it special?? I need to get my fastener catologs out an see if there is any thig lese using that thread.

I have not ruled out modifying a buffer tube as well an attaching it some how differant may with a sick screw downt he middle into a bored hole in a pistol trunion or some thing like that.

many many moons ago there was a tutorial on using tannery junk casting lowers for emergency shtf scenerios, the builder did not even thread, he ground down the tube threads and smoothed down the interior of the rear of the recievers to size and JB welded it into place and drilled a hole to pin it in place
not something one would want to do with a FFL store bought receiver
just thowing out old ideas

Hello 1biggun,
Get some PVC pipe and practice threading it to the AR stock spec. Your Southbend can do it nicely. Tutorials are on the internet from all the usual suspects. No need for a spendy tap. Threading ID is as vital as threading OD for gunsmiths and machinists. Practice on the cheap plastic tube pieces until you are comfortable with the routine.

I make the FIRST pass on steel at about 0.005 inches deep. All subsequent cuts are only 0.003 inches deep to prevent blowing the tool point off or having a wreck. Use tapping fluid. Yes, it takes a while. You'll find that it becomes a ritual that you stick to. 60º threading inserts are very handy. Also use a threading "fish" gauge to help align things, check V-form shapes etc... They rather resemble an arrow head.

Southbends are nice lathes. I'm currently rebuilding a "new to me" old (1950's vintage) 12x36 Atlas.

YEA I SHOULD LEARN TO USE MY LATHE A LITTLE BETTER. INSIDE THREADS IS ONE THING I HAVE NEVER MESSED WITH. THE TIME TO DO IT IS MY ISSSUE. ID LIKE TO BE ABLE TO THREAD A TRUNION BORE ALSO ON THE LATHE SO IT WOULD BE GOOD PRACTICE.

THE THREAD IS 1-3/16"X X16 ITS A ODD BALL TAP AN THERE DONT SEEM TO BE ANY OFF THE SHELF SPANNER NUTS OR ANY NUT IN THIS THREAD.

Those rare and odd threads on the AR-15's etc are from aero engineering. The late Eugene Stoner was an aircraft ordnance specialist in the USMC in WW-II and after the war an aero engineer who worked his way up to design engineer from the machine shop level.

INTERESTING INFO. WONDER IF HE JUST HAPPEND TO HAVE THAT TAP IN HIS COLLECTION WHEN HE WAS FIGURING IT ALL ALL OUT.

ITS ODD HOW SOME STUFF GETS MADE WITH THE WEIRDEST SCREWS, PINS A MATERIAL SIZES.. LOOK AT SOME OF THE BARREL THREADS USED ON BOLT ACTIONS THERE OFTEN SOME UNCOMMON SIZE AN TREAD STYLE. HALD THE TIME YOU WOULD THINK THE DESIGNERS HAD NEVER SEEN A THREAD AN DRILL BIT SIZE CHART HANGNG ON A WALL IN THERE LIVES.

i bought an ACE internal adapter, decided i didnt like the pig nose (scrapped it) drilled a 16 mm hole thru the adapter (i think thats the size i used) turnded down a peice of bar stock aluminum to the ID of a buffer tube, turned the other end down to pressure fit the hole i drilled in the adapter. slid the buffer tube on, drilled , pinned and sanded it down. Turned out really nice , flushes up the stock to the receiver

Hey 1biggun, Will this work for you? If so pm me your shipping address. it's 1 3/8" diameter 4130 about 1 1/8" long and threaded for a buffer tube. I already had the lathe set up for 16tpi for threading a 357AR barrel for the barrel extension and it was easy to make.

Glad it'll work for you, I actually have another piece about the same size (the original piece I cut this from was about 2.5" long) I might as well thread for you also. I'll get it in the mail this week.

MAN THAT WOULD BE GREAT iD LOVE TO UP DATE MY KIDS BUILD AS WELL SO A COUPLE WOULD REALLY BE NICE. I JUST USED A LOCK NUT WELDED TO A PISTOL TRUNION AN IVE BEEN AFRAID THE THREADS MIGHT PULL OUT IF IT GOT DROPPED OR ABUSED.

I WOULD NOT BE SUPRISED IF THERE IS A MARKET FOR THESE FOR GUYS WHO WANT TO DO THERE OWN AR STOCK MOUNTS ON VARIUOS WEAPONS.

I finished up the 2nd one last night and got them mailed out today. I didn't deburr them so the ends are sharp, but I figure they'll be easy enough to touch up in a 3-jaw chuck. Enjoy!

I agree I was thinking of making them when I could not find any on the net. the fact that there steel makes it easy to attach them to various set ups an differant guns.

Im already invisiong tapering the rear to fit onto a pistol type trunion nice an smooth or posssably adding a plate with a dove tail on it to slide up an down in a dovetail recess to give an adjustiable comb an stock height.

Im damm sure going to put them to good use an make something trick out of them.

dont sweet he burrs or any of that I really apreciate you doing this for me. the kids dad who im helping build a gun for cant believe how many people just offered to send stuff or make stuff to help a kid they never met. im going to use the second one to clean up the kind of cobbled set up I made two years ago with a lock nut welded to a pistol trunion in a hurry.
