I just did two flats, so here is what I found out,
    1st.
Have stripped upper, and use it to keep everything in line.
    2nd
Get a length of 1 inch OD pipe or tube. mine measured .950 inch with caliper and it had to be pushed into the upper and the buffer tube. worked very well.
    3rd
Add a block to make a safety plunger tube out of.
and I added a some metal to keep the upper from moving left/right at the rear take down pin, on the first flat I drilled 1/4 hole in small square .1 inch thick, to add metal to the inside of the rear take down pin left and right, works well, and the next flat I added a block that is in the photo that keeps the upper from moving left/ right, each works.

I think it's awesome!! I'd go even farther as long as the strength was still enough in all critical areas. See exactly how much weight you could remove.

Hope you like grinding! If I charged myself by the hour I would have gone bust on this one. But it was fun and if I did another it would go much faster and I could avoid having to re-do some things. I say go for it!

Thanks! Would you guys agree the first one is to learn on and the rest should go much better and faster?
Also I beleive a TIG would be great for this, a MIG tuned up with the correct wire speed and heat would probably do pretty good also, although a flux wire welder like mine works, just messy. And JB weld is your friend on that!
You know, with all the welding with all types of systems that I've done in the past you would think I would have a better welder.

sure thats how i learned on the 80% with a drill press...

then on fold ups & bolt ups... first one should always be "expendable". :-)

good MIG works just fine. but i did notice a HUGE difference in going to "bottle fed" MIG from flux core.
