    Default New AR15 hunting upper

    Suggestions please:
Best buddy has an AR-15, plain jane with full mil spec and regular upper. He is an AVID deer hunter and would like to upgrade to something like a .308 upper....suggestions?

he was turned on by the new S&W .300 whisper, but I told him to look around a bit more. He hunts deer REGULARLY here in VA and already has a 7MM REM MAG...

    Ideas please.

nevermind, I see that the magwell (lower) needs to be changed along with the upper when changing to a .308.
Also learning that MOST loads are specialty OR wildcat loads for other than STOCK uppers........
6.8 perhaps?? I suppose that anything will be costly but he aint using the rifle in stock form, so any coversion would be an improvement I suppose.....? its his money and he dont mind spending it

30 remington ar but I don't know if remington sells just uppers, or any of the WSSM uppers but they're not cheap. I looked at building a 6mmbrx, 6mm dasher, and a few others, but ran into specialty bolts, barrel extensions, dies ect which make it expensive. might be better off getting a bare bones ar10 if he is wanting 308 level power. The 6.8 is a easy swap and so is 7.62x39.

I just looked last night and the guy at ar performance is making his bench rest case head size (.473") ar15 bolt heads again. I think they were $200ish last year for a bolt and barrel extension, but that would get you into 30 rem ar power class of rounds. No price listed for the bolt and extension on the site, but if you have access to a lathe that would be the cheapest way to get a near 308 power round in the ar15.

The 762x39 upper uses the same lower as the 223?

Yep, there was a caliber specific 762x39 lower that took ak mags, but I don't remember off hand who made it. Just get a complete 7.62x39 upper and mag and you'll be in business. I'm running 6mm and 9mm uppers on standard ar15 lowers. The list of calibers that you can get an upper for an ar15 is pretty long. I'm tempted to break my piggy bank to get one of the ar performance super bolts and barrel extensions in 30br.

all yo really need to convert a 5.56/223 to 7.62x39 is a 7.62x39 barrel, bolt and mag made for the 7.62x39. everything else is stock AR-15.

Thats right! there are usually also several calibers that use the same bolt face size so you may be able to just replace the barrel and if needed the mag depending on the caliber you choose.
