Postak N.O. agrees to return weapons

Agreeing to settle a lawsuit filed by the National Rifle Association, the city of New Orleans promised this week to return hundreds of firearms seized by police from law-abiding citizens during the chaotic days that followed Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

While a step in the right direction, the article says the people aren't going to be compensated for any damages they've received as a result of the police departments failure to use reasonable care in the storage of the guns. The last news footage I saw about it many months ago showed the rusty guns in 55gal garbage cans full of water in a shipping container outside. While that might be "reasonable care" for a rock it certainly isn't reasonable care for a firearm. I certainly hope when people pick up their guns they walk over to the court house and file a civil lawsuit for damages.

Sad and angering that it took a lawsuit to force NO to undo something that should never have been done.
I have a daughter. I tell her, "911 is what you dial after you're raped. 1911 is what you should have before they try."

This illustrated MORE than just a State confiscating firearms. this could be done on a much larger scale and the impending doom of whatever the emergency would be enough reason to do this. People would also TOTALLY overlook this as they are caught up in the moment and the event, as they did with Katrina

Hate to be the bringer of bad news but most people down here (in La) dont even care about this. And we are a southern state. A sad state of affairs indeed
