    Default 308 SAGIA 1ST IMPRESSIONS

I WENT TO MY FFL TODAY TO PICK UP AND REGISTER A COUPLE RECIVERS. I NOTICED HE HAD A 308 SAGIA ON THE CONSIGNMENT RACK FOR $349 IT IS IN AS NEW CONDITION AND DOESENT EVEN HAVE WEAR ON THE RAILS STILL HAS FINISH ON TH EJECTOR THE SELECTOR HASENT EVEN LEFT A MARK YET. I JUMPED ON THE DEAL WANTING A 3 LUG GUN FOR A FUTURE BUILD AND THE PRICE WAS TO GOOD.

I GOT IT HOME AND DECIDET TO LOOK IT OVER AND IMOA THIS THING JUST SCREAMS CHEAP! (YA I KNOW IM GOING TO PISS OFF SOME OF YOU) THE ACTION IS VERY TIGHT WHEN IT LOCKES INTO PLACE AND I CAN SEE THT THE EXTRACTOR IS HITTING THE BARREL. IT TAKES A GOOD EFFORT TO PULL BACK THE CHARGING HANDE BUT THATS WHEN I CUT MY WRIST SEVERLY ON THE RAZOR SHARP EDGE OF THE DUST COVER WERE THE EJECTION PORT ENDS! THE TRIGGER IS THE ABSOLUTE WORST I HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERD IN MY LIFE. IT HONESTLY HAS OVER 1/2" OF PULL AND FEELS LIKE MUSH AND NEVER RELEASES AT THE SAME POINT AND THE ANGLE OF PULL IS MORE UP THAN BACK. THE BOLT HOLD OPEN WHILE A NICE FEATRE IS DIFICULT TO USE IMOA AND STILL REQUIRES PULLING BACK THE HANDEL TO RELEASE IT. THE GAS BLOCK OR THE SIGHTS ARE CANTED SLIGHTLY. I PULLED THE DUST COVER AND ALL LOOKS OK . THE SMALL BOLT STEAM LOOKS CHEASY ALTHOUGH IM SURE IT WAS TO REDUCE WEIGHT AND INCREASE RELIABILTY IT IS REALLY SLOPPY IN THE CARRIER COMPARED TO SAY A M70 YUGO. THE FORE GRIP HAS A GAP BETWEEN THE RECIVER. THE STOCK SEEMS LONG TO ME AND THE COMB IS AT AN UNCOMFORTABLE ANGLE. SOMETHING INSIDE THE RECIVER RATTLES (NOT THE SLING EYES THAT ARE TO NARROW FOR A STANDARD SLING). THE SIGHTS ARE AS POOR AS YOU CAN GET AND THE THE SIGHT LEAF ONLY IS MARKED TO 300 METERS THE SIGHT BLOCK IS POORLY MACHINED WITH SANDING SCRATCHES NOT MILL MARKS??. MAG FIT IS OK BUT THE RELEASE IS SHARP TO THE TOUCH AS IT THE SELECTOR EDGE. tHIS THING HAS MADE ME BLEED TWICE TODAY.

I HAVE OTHER SAIGA,S BUT THIS ONE IS THE POOREST QUALITY 1VE SEEN.
i REALLY DIDNT WANT TO DO A CONVERSION ON IT i WAS THINKING OF A REBARREL TO A 260 REMINGTON OR 6.5 CREED MORE OR A 22-250 AND WANTED A THREE LUG ACTION. THE TRIGGER IS COMPLETY UNUSABLE TO i WILL LIKELY HAVE TO CONVERT IT TO A STANDARD AK CONFIGURATION BEFORE ANY BANS TAKE PLACE. I HAVENT SHOT IT YET BUT DONT EXPECT MUCH WITH THOSE SIGTS AND TRIGGER ILL GET A SCOPE MOUNT AND TRY IT SOON . i AM A HUGE FAN OF AK,S AND HAVE BUILT AND OWNED A BUNCH BUT I HAVE TO CALL THIS AS I SEE IT THE RECIVER IS MARKED rUSSIAN AMERICAN ARMORY COMPANY SCOTSBURG IN. ANY IDEA HOW OLD IT IS???

THIS THING HAS A DATE WITH THE MILLING MACHINE SOON AS IT IS UN USABLE FOR ANY THING I CAN THINK OF AS IS. IF I CAN GET THE TRIGGER BETTER THEN MAYBE I CAN STAY AS CONFIGURED BUT IT WILL NEED SOME MAJOR TWEAKING TO BE A HUNTING RIFLE OR PROFECIANT AS ANY OTHER TYPE OF FIRE ARM.

I also picked up a used Saiga .308 on the cheap.
It needs lots of work as you describe.

I moved the fcg forward. Sold the old tg, fcg and polymer furniture in the
marketplace. I went with the RSA milled AK fcg.
Milled my own lower hg. Added a Tabuk flash hider.
I also have since added a mini-Versapod to the forend.

It it now worthy of becoming a weapon.
Is highly effective out to 300 yds.
Shoots like a sniper rifle. (as if I knew what that was)

    It was a fun project.

NICE BUILD I LIKE THE FORE GRIP AND THE STOCK WHO DID THE WOOD?? IS THE STOCK A REWORKE FACTORY PIECE??? i WOULD LIKE A STOCK LIKE THAT BUT WITH A HIGER COMB. i BET THAT BIG MAG DONT WORK WELL WITH THE MINNI VERSIPOD.

THIS BUILD WILL LIKELY END UP A VARMIT RIFLE IN 260 REMINGTON WITH A HEAVY BARREL AND A BARREL MOUNTED RSB/MILLED SCOPE MOUNT MUCH LIKE MY 223 VARMIT BUILD FROM A ROMMY KIT. ONLY i WANT TO HIT STUFF A 1000 YARDS NOT 500 YARDS LIKE THE 223

On a 308 Saiga I picked up cheap, I chose the long barrel because the short barrel 308 model has an odd tapered / smaller diameter section under the front sight block. I stripped the barrel and took it and a new Bulgarian stripped AK74 barrel to a friend who has a really large, long lathe. It's a Chinese lathe but he bought it so big to finish 50 caliber BMG barrels. I had him turn down the 308 Saiga barrel to AK74 diameters, except under the handguard. and shortened the barrel to AK74 length. I used the 308 rear sight block, AK74 handguard retainer, AK74 gas block and AK74 front sight block. Added a Bulgarian AK-103 muzzle brake. The barrel is lighter than the short barrel 308 Saiga. Recoil is fairly high because of the weight but it still has some weight under the handguard. So right now it looks like a 308 AK74 with a fixed stock. I think the magazines can be modified to add two rounds. The magazine spring needs to be turned up side down to prevent binding but I haven't modified the magazines, I only bought a couple of extra's.

I did the wood. The PSL stock was thinned around the grip and reshaped.
The Handguard was my first milling job using a block of hard maple.

260 would make a nice varminter. I like your .223 conv. It's tops.

yEA i BETTER BUY A COUPLE HI CAP MAGS FOR IT BEFORE THEY GET BANNED. THERE NOT CHEAP.

I AM SPREAD SO THIN TRYING TO GET EVERY THING INTO A CONFIGURATION THAT I WANT BEFORE ANY BANS TAKE PLACE. I WILL LIKELY CONVERT IT INTO A PISTOL GRIP VERSION OR USE THE SAME STYLE STOCK MY VARMIT BUILD HAS. MONEY IS GETTING SO TIGHT THAT SIMPLE 922 PARTS ARE TOUGH TO SWALLOW. FOR NOW EVERY THING IS GETTING FACTORY TRIGGERS AND SHOT WITH USA MAGS UNTILL i CAN BUY $300 WORTH OF TRIGGERS. I JUST WANT TO GET RECIVERS ON ALL MY KITS BEFORE ANY LAW CHANGES.

I REALLY LIKE THE WAY GOOD WOOD LOOKS ON THESE. i FIGHRE WITH A CUSTOM BARREL AND ALL THE STUFF NEEDED TO MAKE THIS WHAT I WANT I WILL HAVE CLOSE TO $1000 IN IT MINUS THE OPTICS LIKELY ANOTHER $800-$1200. I REALLY WANT TO HIT PRAIRE DOGS AT $800 YARDS AND HAVE IT BE SKILL NOT LUCK. I THINK THE 260 REMINGTON COULD DO IT OR POSSABLY A 22-243 MIDDLESTEAD WITH 80 GRAIN BULLETS. ALSO HAVE CONSIDERD A 22-250 IMPROVED IN TA 1-8 TWIST.

    I like your .223 conv. It's tops.
tHANK YOU VERY MUCH I HOPE TO DO A PICTORIAL WHEN I TEAR IT DOWN THIS WINTER. I DIDNT HAVE A CAMERA OR THE TIME WHEN I BUILT IT TO DOCUMENT IT. IT WOULD LOOK BETTER WITH CUSTOM WOOD LIKE YOURS, BUT THESE THINGS TAKE A BEATING GETTING HAULED AROUND ON ATVS AND IN TRUCKS WHEN HUNTING WITH THEM

The Saiga 308 used to be a great (picked up a new one for $270 last year). But now it seems like they all are $450-500. Still where else can you get a 308 win AK, besides a Yugo Mitchell Arms that cost $1500.

Man im sitting here holding this thing and I see very little that can be left alone. as soon as all the other builds are in a configuration that makes me happy. this thing is getting stripped to the bone. I feel like i got a great deal on a kit. Ive got a line on a 6.5mm blank and this needs to be a 260 remington. Im thinking some thing like a veper shown below. are these guns for sale anywere?????

    M.K. has done the crossover.
    This version is countrified.
Elegant in a way I cannot quantify.

HE SAW THOSE PICKS OF THE FULL STOCK VERSION AND DIDNT KNOW IST ORIGIN A COMMENTED HOW HED LIKE ONE. IS ALL IN THE PERCEPTION. A FULL LENGTH SAGIA CONVERSION STOCK AND PUSHBUTTION SAFTEY FOR THE SAIGA WOULD SELL IMOA.
