    Do not do it.
Actually, it wouldn't make you a Federal felon. An agent that wanted to misinterpret the law would have to be there when you did it and then he'd have to convince a jury of your peers that you purposefully removed or defaced the serial number.

There's as many people in Federal prison for this heinous crime (removing a trunnion and reinstalling it) as there are for the wretched 922r violators and that would be zero!!

Do you honestly want any Gunco members to be the first?

funny, My builder removed mine from my chinese when he did the conversion to euro style and he's still walking the street.

I don't believe there's a problem removing it for repairs if you put it back...

It's illegal, even for SOT 7 licensees (don't let any of them fool you by saying other wise)

If you didn't get caught, you didn't get caught (but your builder is now implicated - thanks).

Sorta like speeding down the empty highway at night - if nobody sees you, you're not getting a ticket - but it's still illegal.

    It's the law.

Serial numbers cannot be assigned except by the manufacturer.

Not even a SOT 7 can reassign/remark a serial number on something someone else manufactured.
They can destroy the original and replace the parts on a new receiver that they've manufactured.

nobody said anything about that, don't change the subject.

show me where it says you cannot remove a serial #'d trunnion from a receiver to perfrom repairs or modifications and then reinstall it.

nobody said anything about permanent separation of the two..

The laws says you can't remove or deface a serial number. It doesn't say "Oh, but it's okay for 5 minutes." or "Oh, but it's OK if you're just fixin' it."

In the USA the receiver is the firearm, and foreign AKs are allowed into the country w/o a serialized receiver because the serial number is riveted to the receiver (on the barrel trunnion).

If you remove the barrel trunnion from an intact receiver, you are defacing or destroying the serial number assigned to that receiver.

We've gone over this several times before here.

Once again I feel you are twisting what the law says...

I'm just asking for you to show me specifically instead of trying to scare someone..
