Interesting, but a moot point for Me.

When I release the BHO, I'm pulling the bolt all the way back and then releasing it, anyway. I want to be sure it has enough momentum to strip a round and fully lock up.

    Here's my thoughts,
The BHO does not have a release where one could push it down and chamber a round.
All my Saigas in caliber or guages will not strip and chamber a round from the BHO holding position.
The BHO is for safety when benched.
The BHO allows for easy insertion of a short 10 round magazine because there is less leverage available.
The BHO on the shotguns allow room for the nose of the shell so insertion of the magazine is easier.

True, that is the design of the Saiga.
The main point is, the original BHO has to be modified if the BHO is to be functional as in the AR FN and others.

Very interesting (done in my best Artie Johnson voice). Zulu, your BHO contact point with the bolt carrier is much further forward in the receiver than the one I have. The BHO contacts the bolt carrier just forward of the selector cutout area in mine. On the BHO in mine I had to cut out an area in the BHO 'tail' such that the selector can be removed/installed w/o BHO removal. Somewhere along the production line it appears that Saiga changed their BHO design.

Edit; here's a much better photo of the BHO. Again, the only mod I did was cut out the half-elipse area directly below the contact point with the bolt carrier in order to install/remove the selector with the BHO still in place.

BTW - Paperwork indicates my Saiga was had post production inspection on June 7, 2008 so it's a new production model.

Pookie did you check yours for the BHO or are you building a new piece for it?
