Ak build help?!!

I bought an ak parts kit (Bulgarian underfolder)
I obviously had to order front and rear trunnions. I opted, due to availability or lack thereof to buy a used barrel from Numrich's.

The trunnion I bought was listed as a Romanian front trunnion from black market arms and is marked as 23 mm. The barrel components appear to fit, haven't tried to press them yet, but the trunnion is huge. I will try to post some sizes tomorrow, but I figured I'd check with you all. Is there something I am missing? Or do I just have random parts?

By the way, the rear sight block and trunnion will not fit each other well.

Any ideas?

The kit you got is most likely a milled receiver kit, there are some small differences then a stamped receiver kit.
I'm not sure what to say to some of your questions, maybe when you post pic(s) I'll be able to help.

And welcome to the forum

It is a milled kit, but it was my understanding that all I needed to do was order trunnion and a barrel. I did some research and discovered that euro barrels are 23 mm at the chamber. Chinese barrels are 19.75 or something, but the barrel is thicker on the Chinese. I don't get how every thing else fits but the chamber is too small.

#4 ·
welcome to the forum. did you order chinese parts? They may not fit the Euro parts.

Look in the archives here on the forum. There is a chart that shows you the differences in the Euro vs Chinese parts.

Usually, parts kits come with a front trunnion. Yours did not? That lends credence to Coils' statement regarding milled kit. You are in a whole nother ballpark there.

post pics. They will help us figger out what you have...

I know it is a milled receiver kit. I bought a stamped receiver and a used akm barrel along with front and rear trunnions.

The barrel is not threaded at the chamber and has the appropriate threads at the muzzle. I'll be measuring it shortly, but I don't think it's a Chinese barrel.

See attached pics.

OK I got you on the milled kit, makes more sense now.
But I never messed with a milled kit so I'm going to have to go off fuzzy memory, I know you'll find the info here.

First
Someone mentioned before that the Bulgy milled AKs (actually most of the milled receiver AKs) uses the AK47 pattern barrel. From the rear sight forward they are a little larger then the AKM.

Second
The rear sight & trunnion pic is what I was thinking you meant. You will find this with all trunnion I believe, so you'll have to mod the trunnion in this area or the rear sight base.

Third
The barrel trunnion pic, that barrel looks way to small or the trunnion is way to big.
You'll need to measure those and yes they should be about 23mm, as you stated the Combloc AKM uses a barrel/trunnion press fit at about 23mm.

YOUR CAHNCES OF FINDING A CINESSE TRUNION ARE SLIM AN NONE AN IF YOU DID ITS GOING TO BE VERY VERY EXPENSIVE.

YOU NEED A DIFFERNT BARREL. IT ALSO LOOKS LIKE THE RSB IS WRONG FOR THE TRUNION.

BOTTOM LINE IS YOU NEED A CORRECT BARREL AN IF IM NOT MISTAKEN THE YUGO BARREL PARTS WILL NOT FIT A ROMMY OR OTHER AKM BARREL. ALSO THE THERE MIGT BE SOME DUST COVER FIT ISSUES.

WHAT YOU LIKELY NEED IS A YUGO PRESS IN BARREL .

IM NOT EVEN GOING TO SUGGEST TRYING A SLEAVE ON THE 19MM BARREL. THERE ARE TO MANY ISSUES TO DEAL WITH .

THERE WERE A LOT OF THOSE BARREL FOR SALE CHEAP BECAUSE THEY DONT WORK ON ANYTHING. IT MIGHT ALSO BE A SKS BARREL AS WELL.

HATE TO SAY IT BUT YOUR KIND OF IN A BAD SPOT .

THE FIRST THING YOU DO BEFORE BUYIING ANY MORE PARTS IS MIC THE PARTS YOU HAVE SO YOU KNOW WHAT SIZE BARREL JOURNALS YOU NEED.

CFS USED TO HAVE DARK BORE YUGO BARRELS CHEAP BUT THERE GENERALY CRAP.

I found a barrel from gm that will fit the 23mm trunion while maintaining the proper dimensions for the fab, gas block, and rear sight base. Guess it's time to call numrich and return the barrel. I wouldn't really all a Chinese ak an akm would you? I've always heard of them described differently. Not that it matters as I would have needed a different barrel anyways. Thanks for all the help and input guys!!

like Coils said the milled kits are a little bigger on the barrel components. most euro AKM FSB inside diameter is around 0.690+/- the milled bulg FSB are around 0.730+/- about a mm difference, even the gas block is about a mm larger. I would find a barrel blank and have it just profiled to fit your components. green mountain sells barrel blanks Green Mountain Rifle Barrel - Search

also here is another member's build thread using a milled kit on a stamped receiver

Are you talking a profiled Barrel or some other blank that is unturned, unchambered, unprofiled?

As it's already been stated the milk barrels have larger journals than the stamped barrels. if this is true nobody is going to make a barrel that fits your parts correctly.

There is a thread hear that somewhere lists Journal diameters of various makes and models you need to study it before buying anything else.

Hey there and good luck with this build. You know, I just finished my first build and Did exactly what you did: I bought a Bulgarian underfolder thinking the parts were universal. They aren't. I ended up buying a Romanian front and rear trunnion, gas block, RSB, and front sight at an additional cost of near $200 dollars. Yes, the parts kit was only $220 but adding it up including the barrel, trigger group, muzzle and grip the total was over $ 650 for the parts alone. When finished the build ended up being a hybrid of American, Romanian and Bulgarian parts, not exactly a matched kit by any means. Plus the top and bottom hand guards don't fit perfectly the top required shimming. My advice would be to unload these parts for what you paid for them , research a bit more and start over. Avoid Yugo, Bulgarian, and Chinese kits. Try to get a kit with the barrel included and pressed for your first build. You'll be happier when you're done.

I found the following from somewhere, I can't take credit but hope this helps. I wish I had this info when I started my project.

If you are buying a kit, there is no reason to avoid Yugo, Bulgarian, and Chinese kits. Those are some of the best variants of the AK47 platform available. Now, they may not be the best choice for your first build, but they are great guns none the less. In fact, the Romanian kits that I've put together have always given me some kind of trouble. One of the easiest builds I've done was the AMD-65. Make sure to do some research about the kit you are about to buy so you know what you are getting yourself into.

I do agree that the quality of the Bulgarian kit was top notch to the point I wondered if it was used for more than ceremonial display. The replacement pieces I got seperately were expensive and showed a lot more wear. For a first build I still recommend a kit with matching parts that include the trunnions at least. If it has the barrel you save an awful lot of work dealing with headspace and drilling the pin and gas holes. Focus on doing the receiver right and everything else falls into place. Just sayin' with no disrespect (this is only my 3rd post after all)
