    Default Lowes Steel

Lowes steel sux for this jig.

It is not totally square as has been mentioned in previous posts. I would if available find some from another source that is square.

The steel from Lowes needs to be laid together a certain way, and even then it does not want to lay square.

    For what it is worth....

    Regards,

    Thom

Why would you press one end completely and then move to the other? Wouldnt you want to press evenly?

    Postak looks good

Grasshopper, will this jig work ok with a Tapco flat with pre-bent top rails?
I was going thru the metal in my shop and really want to give this jig a try.
    Thanks

When you measured for the jig, did you make it to exact measurments of the recievers dimensions or did you overcompensate for the bend?

I set my jig at 0.010". this gives 5 thous gap for each side. Any less, you will get shear issues, any more and you'll not get a square bend.

    WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

Chalk one up for ol' Grasshopper! He truly knows how to design a receiver bender!!!!

I went to Menards (large hardware store, but local to the upper midwest), and bought what I could find that worked... I had to beef up the push straps (the flats), because they didn't have any of the suggested thickness. I notched the bars for the magazine dimples, and it worked like a charm.

    Here's my shopping list:

    5/16 Carriage bolts, 8-piece, 3" long: $2.29

    5/16 Hex nut, 96-piece: $1.49

    5/16 Hex bolt, 8-piece: $1.44

    Flat steel 3/16" thick: $5.48

Angle iron in suggested dimensions: $6.59

    Tax: 6%

    Total: $18.33

That's one HELL of a bargain, compared to the "professional" flat benders at $150.00!

MAD PROPS To Grasshopper for his ever so ingenious flat bending jig!!!

P.s. Our city just put in a Lowes and a Home Depot a few years ago... I've noticed that Home Depot will always add like 4 bucks to anything they sell, just because they're Home Depot. Lowes isn't so bad, but still kinda sucks. Menards has good prices, and excellent staff. I don't even check Home Depot or Lowes anymore... I'm like 98% guaranteed to get the better deal at Menards.
