It has not been a problem for me. The only problem i can see is with the rear trunion and if you are building a pistol or folder. I just put the rear end again the angle and hammer it a few time. a little filing will fix it too. I am working on an upgrade that will make the top rail bending easier.
Make sure you have two bolts in the magwell and that they are extremely tight. If that doesn't fix the issue try to switch to the more square bar stock that you might get from a regular steel distributer.
Thanks i thought so the steel bar i used was about 15 ths smaller than needed for the tapco flat deminisions..i went to a machine shop a few miles from my house and asked the owner if he had any steel the right size ,the turkey was an:ahole: :ahole: he said it was a waste of his time to cut me off two pieces that small. There is another machine shop/welding, way out in the sticks i herd about and when i called him he said we sell anything to anybody thats how we make a living .He knew about the other welding shop and he agreed but he had a better name for him(don't want to be sensored)
it sounded something like this ...that SOB IS a MUTHER FLUCKER from way back.

I'm lucky I guess. I work for a company that designs, prototypes and produces specialized printers for the apparel labeling industry. We have a full blown machine shop in house. I'm the entire IT dept here and besides I pretty much run a charity PC repair shop for the guys/gals that work here. When I need something small like that they are always happy to help out. Took me all of 5 minutes to secure 2 13 inch long pieces of 1.250" x 1/2 barstock. :thumbup1:
Have to admit I don't dare bring in parts for pressing though... its kinda hard to keep it under the radar when your buddy in the machine shop is pressing a barrel out of a trunnion for ya.
Rex,
Have you thought about using the Auto Zone Pulley Puller to press out your barrels? $20 and about 20 min. grinding a couple small reliefs into the jaws so that they fit the trunion better. I have pressed out a bunch a barrels with it using only a 1/2" drive ratchet and a few pennies. I do put the jaws in my vise to ensure that they don't pop off during the press. But other than that It's almost too easy.

You can use a vise to remove the pin, however, a press is alot easier getting them little buggers out. The thread that I started re: Box tubing has a link to some pics of the tools I use.
And no, the removal tool works only 1 way.
There are however a variety of ways to get the barrel back in.
Again, a shop press is very handy for this step too.
In my mind, it was worth every penny!
I just wanted to thank you for posting your way of making your dies for folding flats. I have been waiting for 2 seperate persons to build a 555th jig for me and neither came through. I was ready to order one on line but couldn't find one, then I came across your post. We ( my wife and I) built your jig and will hopefully bend some flats next week. Any advise for someone that is nervous and ready to try this for the first time? I will be using my HF 12 ton press.
Again THANK YOU!:notworthy
So the proper way to bend a flat with the 'Grasshopper' Jig is to use a vise or big hammer, and work on one end at a time? Any pics of this proceedure? I'm having difficulty 'seeing' this process in my head. Seems like it would be easy to get things out of alignment.
I built the jig, and tried to bend a couple of nodakspud flats with it. I would say, that I had limited success. I think I might need to try a 3rd time. If it fails, then I'm going with a 555th type jig. Thats going to require the shop press to do right. My BFH is too small. LOL.
Please understand: I am in no way blaming any one except myself. I was a miserable failure with my poor man's jig. I must have not measured something right. Two flats ruined. Oh well, I guess I was in over my head. I have since ordered the jigs from Curtis at AK-Builder and more flats from Tapco. I still learned from this, as this was the first steel I have ever cut. Again no one is to blame except me and after the dissappointment, I realized that I look forward to completing some AKs!

dude yesterday i went to a farm store picked up some angle iron and flat steel and took it home and put it together. now today i am going to try to bend my flat!!! i took pictures of putting it all together step by step and i am going to make detailed instructions and put them on my site.
i need to cut the flat steel down a bit shorter. then if all goes well i will have my receiver done.
I'd probably really screw up something. My poor man Jig worked great no problems at all.
Total cost
2X2 angle $15
1.25X1.25x.25 $5
nuts and bolts $6
total = $ 26
I have bent 2 flats with this jig, very simple allthough a lot of elbow grease with just a BFH.I used a big C clamp to keep the flat stable untill it started to go into the jig.I used a 1 1/4" square piece of stock to do the top rails, still grinding down the rails but I am amazed that all the holes line up,have assembled the trigger/hammer assembly into the shell, ran the bolt carrier though it(still need to grind down the upper rails a bit) but so far,it looks like it should go together with no problems.
First post...with threads like this you guys rock...[Terminator voice on] I'll be back.[Terminator voice off]
Has anyone considered modifying this to bend the new Tapco Yugo Flats. I think that it would be easy.
yeah i was thinking the same thing about the yugo underfolder kits. i have one on order so hopefully i can at least find some drawing of the receiver with dimensions,,,,
