    Default Tritium Vials

Not sure where to post this but since there are many AK kits with depleted tritium sights I figured I'd put it here.

I found some at the "Candlepower" forums in the FS section. They are shipped as replacement vials for a tritium-powered keychain FOB.

    Not a bad price, either!

The keychain fobs called "glowrings" have larger inserts:

If you search for "tritium" on that FS forum you can probably find some more. It would take a very small amount of work to get these into the Yugo rifles for replacements, or to convert the painted-on night sights to these with a small drill, some silicone RTV caulk and patience.

    Enjoy!

The 1.5mmX6mm vials sold at candlepower by Merkava at http://www.cpfmarketplace.com/mp/sho...d.php?t=170374 are the exact diameter of the Yugo front sight vial. Cheaper, too and you don't need to disassemble anything.

That said, I ordered one on January 3 and haven't yet received it. I'm not worried or complaining (not yet!), just advising patience. I'll post a short report if/when I get my vial.

US Mail usually gets to my place between 4 and 4:30 PM.

Wouldn't you know it, today the vial arrived. Nicely packaged and bright enough that I can readily see it in a dark room without waiting for my eyes to adjust.

And, it fit perfectly in the Yugo front sight. Slid in like a lubed cartridge into a chamber. In fact, I now have a problem in that the vial doesn't want to come out of the vial channel, even though I thoroughly cleaned it before trying a fit.

I ordered 3 from Merkava on the 8th! I checked the thread at CPF and they're getting gobbled up......... may just have to order more before I get a chance to review the first 3.

Got my vial out of the sight - folded up cellophane tape to a point, sticky side out and used it to grip the vial and work it out.

The vial is indistinguishable from the original - other than actually GLOWING - works like custom made for the job.

Yes they ARE slow - it took about 3 weeks for mine to arrive. However I think that's to be expected since it is being shipped from so far with no priority mailer.

I put an order in yesterday. I've been wanting a set for my Galil and at least one of my Yugos. The price seems pretty decent.

If it weren't for the anal regulations here regarding radioactive material, we'd be able to buy these particular vials for a buck or two.

Funny thing is, the trijicon sights use tritium, various watches use it. Our NRC has ruled that those finished goods are OK but a plain tritium vial for use such as we want, or as a key-chain, is "frivolous use" of radioactive material and do not allow them to be sold here.

This is tritium gas FCS, not some kind of weapons-grade uranium. And within the glass container, it's as safe as bottled water.

Well I've read about tritium and that it can actually be used in the plutonium refinement process. No idea how much, don't really care. I do agree it is kinda silly that watches have it but vials are taboo.

I'm going to order a few more for some other guns I want to convert. I figure I'll get it while I can!

Right now, there is a company that sells tritium vials that fit the Romanian PSL scope. Some guys over on AKFORUM are trying to get in touch with a rep to determine how much a replacement would be. Hopefully they'll get them to sell!
