    Default AK's 16 countable parts

The 16 countable parts in a stamped AK with a muzzle device.
    (1) Receiver
    (2) Barrel*
    (3) Trunnion*
    (4) Muzzle attachments
    (5) Bolt*
    (6) Bolt carrier*
    (7) Gas piston
    (8) Trigger
    (9) Hammer
    (10) Disconnecter
    (11) Buttstock
    (12) Pistol grip
    (13) Forearm handguards
    (14) Magazine body*
    (15) Follower
    (16) Floorplate
To the best of my knowledge, the 5 parts marked with the * are only available Imported.
No more than 10 of the parts on this list, may be Imported, the rest must be of US mfg.

According to the BATFE, there are indeed 20 countable parts.
However only 16 of the 20 are used in AK's.

You will not find numbers 3,8,10 or 13 (from your list) in a AK.

Hence the title of this thread "AK's 16 countable parts"

    Angry Parts count

If I may be so bold as to display my ignorance in public...

What was the purpose of this law?

I've read so many posts of what you can and can't do but nowhere have I read the "why".

So If I were to build an AMD-65 And used the following US parts I would be O.K.
    (1) Receiver OOW Reciever
    (2) Barrel*
    (3) Trunnion*
    (4) Muzzle attachments Extended AMD Brake
    (5) Bolt*
    (6) Bolt carrier*
    (7) Gas piston US Made Gas Piston
    (8) Trigger G2 FCG
    (9) Hammer G2 FCG
    (10) Disconnecter G2 FCG
    (11) Buttstock
    (12) Pistol grip
    (13) Forearm handguards
    (14) Magazine body*
    (15) Follower
    (16) Floorplate

And building a Romanian kit the following would be OK:
    (1) Receiver OOW Reciever
    (2) Barrel*
    (3) Trunnion*
    (4) Muzzle attachments
    (5) Bolt*
    (6) Bolt carrier*
    (7) Gas piston US Made Gas Piston
    (8) Trigger G2 FCG
    (9) Hammer G2 FCG
    (10) Disconnecter G2 FCG
    (11) Buttstock
    (12) Pistol grip US Made Pistol Grip
    (13) Forearm handguards
    (14) Magazine body*
    (15) Follower
    (16) Floorplate

The BATFE banned the importation of "assault rifles".
They decided that any rifle constructed using more than 10 imported "countable" parts would be considered a imported rifle, and therefore illegal.

    Daedalus,

Yes, You would be OK in both instances.

I think the law was aimed at arms importers such as century and interordnance. They did not want them importing demilled rifles and then reassembling them for domestic sale. I don't think they (BATF) ever imagined the home building craze and all the sharing of building info on the internet.
