I think that the piston is going to be too short, when it fires, the piston will be mis-aligned and get caught somewhere on the front of the gas block.
One possibility might be to design a two-piece telescoping piston head. For that to work you'd either need to incorporate a spring to extend the unit during recoil, or implement a retainer that prevents the piston head from leaving the gas tube.
I would try chamfering the inside of the GB (funnel-like) before I'd try chamfering the front of the piston. Chamfering the piston may make it more susceptable to "blow-by", meaning some of the gas blast may slip around the piston head instead of pushing ON it. Like bad rings in a V8.
Just trying to help - I've dealt with that one before. when using 3/16" long piston "plug". I had to make it "thread the needle" before it would work. It wasn't easy! Upper rail alignment was critical, and even the receiver SPACER came into play. My spacer is screwed thru a roll pin, and 1/2 turn with an allen wrench would make it work or not work.
I believe you will accomplish the "super shorty shorty" successfully.
Yes I have been thinking that also.By chamfering the gasblock it will make as smooth as a transition between the tube and block as humanly possible I think. I too have had a few alignment problems with bent flat receivers but I dont know as a factory one would be much better. Maybe. I got too many flats to think about trying a factory receiver just yet.I think the stock gasport will work.
Cycling issues with these is not from the lack of gas it is the trouble one can have keeping things lined up.Someimes they hang up when they get too short on the gasblock or rear site block. It takes some tweaking here and there to get everything and keep everything in a straight line.I think what I may do is cut about a " or so off the end of the carrier so I can use a little longer piston.
I think you are onto something with the idea of extending the gas tube back through the rear site base-it should help keep things lined up during cycleing. GREAT JOB on this and your shorty pistol front ends.
......Been kinda quiet here - Droog - you still alive???
Don't tell me you got it together and it ain't working......but if that is the case, share where you're at.
I haven't been home for 48 consecutive hours since Thankgiving or else I'd have something to post......need some home-shop-time BADLY.
Let us know what's going on.......if you got 'er together but she ain't working, well you're further than me. At least she's built and your sorting out the bugs...........
BTW has anyone seen that guys in Finland that CYCLES with OUT the gas tube????? Impulse power I guess !!! he posted a video of it working/cycling with NO tube. Heres the link (go to just below the last pic on that page) http://www.homegunsmith.com/cgi-bin/ib3/ikonboard.cgi?;act=ST;f=3;t=12739
Yes I saw that video I guess that tells us all we need to know LOLI havent had time to do much lately and I still need a front 22mm trunnion and the ones Ive found are too spendy for my tastes.
You know looking at the Tantal RSB, it is a bit different than the others. Unlike normal RSBs where there is a thin wall of metal on the sides, the area through which the piston moves is nothing more than a big hole that was drilled.
That got me to start to thinking about a custom RSB that isn't more than that - a rectangular chunck of metal with two holes drilled top and bottom... done right, I believe that would better facilitate a shorter tube in that the RSB becomes the tube itself.
Heck, while you're at it, you could machine a dovetail groove on the top for a scope rail attachment!
I agree with this 100%. You would want something more akin to an AK-74 style or AKS-74U style flash hider/muzzle booster. That would no doubt reduce the fireball flame to a more manageable size.
let me know were your gonna test fire it , so i can show up and toast marshmellows on the flame comin out of that thing !!!! yoo so crasszie !!!!! , i love it !!!!
I found a gasblock so will resume work on it again. Should have it up and runnin in a couple of weeks if something shitty doesnt happen like I get called back to work or something equealy disgusting.

THis looks like an appropriate spot to ask this question , where do I find the info about converting a full sized to a pistol . It seems like it is old hat to a lot of you all , but to me I need to know the ins and outs of the gas tubes , gas ports. barrels etc . I figure somewheres there is a tutorial , but I have not seen it yet.
First you should know that once it is built into a rifle, It cannot be built into a pistol legally. Now to your question, Droog is the man when it come to the diminutive fire breathing dragons. His achivements with the AK pistols have been spectacular. I am looking forward to seeing the completion of this latest Gem.
THe way that I understood the ruling to be is that once the reciever had been demilled it was no longer a rifle and just a collection of parts , ie the reciever is the rifle . And I have seemed to gotten the idea that a lot of longer barrels have been shortened to that of pistol length as long as the reciever was originally made for a pistol and had no way to add a stock or then it would become a sbr . If I am wrong please advise as the preshortened kits seem a lot pricer than the longer parts kits

You are right in that a parts kit is just that, a collection of parts. Since it is not a firearm it can neither be a pistol nor a rifle. To build a pistol from a parts kit you simply build an AK type firearm without the buttstock. You need to make sure that not only is there not a buttstock, but if the barrel is less than 16" OAL there can be no means by which to easily attach a buttstock, such as a slot or bolt hole to which one might be fastened. This is only if the barrel is less than 16"OAL. The easiest way to do this is by using a rear trunion that is designed for this. Usually they look much like a squarish hunk of steel with some cuts in the top for the top cover to lock onto and a couple of rivet holes. Some will have a sling swivel on the rear. They are available from a couple different sources that I can't recall off the top of my head. I'm sure someone else can chime in on this.
One pitfall when building a pistol and using an AMD65 kit is the front pistol grip must be removed and the foregrip must be modified or changed out so that a pistol grip cannot be reattached. If a pistol has two pistol grips then it falls under the Any Other Weapon classification and requires approval/tax stamps similar to a machine gun.
The receiver is the trickiest part really. You must obtain a receiver that was sold as a pistol receiver, or build your own receiver at home. Once a receiver has been built or sold as a rifle then it will always be considered a rifle receiver and cannot be used for a pistol.
If you want a shorter pistol length barrel then you need to either find a Krink kit and build it as a pistol, shorten the barrel yourself, or have it shortened by a gunsmith. The work involved in shortening an AK barrel is relatively complex because of the gas system and would be a very involved project without the proper milling tools, lathe, etc.
Thank you cammer , I have access to a lathe , but lack the milling machines ( at least so far ). Your imformation was very helpful to me and I really appreciate your imput , sorry to say most of my knowledge is from the C&R end of the forum , but my daughter fell in love with the damn pistol and right now I do not have the cash to buy her one , so I was considering a build . I guess she will have to be content with her 74. I still think with your imput in mind I will see if I can buy about 10 parts kits and a dozen flats , there may come a time when I advanced enough to build her one as nice as pirates , droog or red jackets . To bad it is so hard and expensive to get the damn 74s kits anymore , she likes that little hot rod. The only thing that she ever saw pink that she thought was cool was one of the pink aks on the board and she thought that was neat enough to want one for herself ( she hates pink as a general rule) , but she has now decided that her walther PP might look good with pink grips ( gag ).
