The problem with the gas tube if you look at the pictures I posted you can see I cut it off from the back end and all of those damn flutes are in the way of the front of the carrier. I got a new one coming and Ill cut the front end off and get rid of all but a small portion of the flutes. That should work. Got a little done today.
Can you take a dremel w/ a flapper wheel or grinding stone and "deburr" the flutes to make them nice and smooth? Follow-up with a polishing wheel should work for you...
There is more than just burrs in there it is way too tight .You couldnt get the carrier in there if you tried beating it with a hammer. Now I see I even have a bigger problem .Some jackass welded a feed ramp into the Saiga trunion and it sticks ahead about 1/8" too far forward. Now Ill have to remove the barrel and cut that damn thing out.Shit when It rains it pours.
OH OK, I see what you mean- the entire tube is too small for the carrier - gotcha.
Here's a thought - cut the carrier back? Make that shorter on the front? If you have a 4-jaw faceplace for the lathe, you could chuck that up and be able to get it to center and turn it down to make it skinnier. May also eliminate the need for a piston... just thinking aloud.
I dont have a 4-jaw.If the new gas tube will work like I think it will Ill be in pig heaven if not then Ill have to go to the machine shop and have them do it.
Well I got a new gas tube and got it cut down Now Im wating for some nice weather so I can go out to the shed to use the press. Its been colder than a well diggers ass here for the last week.

I have been following your progress with much interest and was wondering if you have made it "out to the shed". If so please give us an update w/ pics BUT based on the weather conditions in Fargo I saw on the news today I imagine its still as cold as a witches tit where you are!
Yes it is cold out. Too damn cold for me. Ill give it a week and it will or should be decent enough to go out and shovel all the snow in front of the door to the shed so I can get in.LOL
well I got a little done. Had to scrap the Russian barrel and trunion and use a Maadi barrel.Hungarian trunion Romanian gas block and handguard retainerHot barrel piston and I have no idea where the bolt and carrier came from. Now to bend up another flat and Ill be good to go.
I dont know yet. I been toying with the idea of removing the site blade and putting a Weaver style rail on the rear site block and mounting a red dot or maybe one of those small laser units.I think I wait to make up my mind when I get it done and see if it will actully work. The longer 9" one Im sure will work as I already made one 10" and it runs fine but I just dont know about the shorter one yet.
The carrier rides on the rails so if it does leave it should find its way back home.I believe you could shorten up the rearward travel a bit with a buffer.Even if it doesnt cut down the travel a lot it probably would be a good idea anyway to maybe lessen the recoil a bit.
Tagged for an update.
I gotta know... man I gotta know!
Does she run!
