Just a word of caution for those of you homebrewing...

At school, we have community protective equipment (masks, gloves, etc.) and the careless students contaminate the gear to the point that you can't avoid it and the salts are going to burn you sooner or later. Even if your gear is clean, you may be splashed and burned...

We are prepared for this with strategically placed squirt bottles of vinegar. Vinegar neutralizes the salts very rapidly and prevents further burning. If you are going to do your own bluing, I highly recommend having the squirt bottles near. The large triggers are easy to operate while wearing gloves, and are a lot easier than locating vinegar in the kitchen, opening a screw top bottle and pouring.

While water may wash off bluing salts, it doesnt neutralize the burn. And $5 in prevention beats hundreds in medical bills.

So Bigal, the Roebic lye worked well? How long did it take you to mix the chemicals? I look forward to your pictures, did it come out black or blue like pugwag's images?

Yeah BigAl, did you use the Lye method? I'm getting confused since there are a few methods posted in this thread.

We mixed up 8lbs of Lye 4lbs of Nitrate and 1 3/5 gal of distilled H2O. Heated it on a propane burner outside, after it started boiling, we added the parts and let them cook for 30 min.s. Piece of cake!!!

The finish is almost black, but matches the Yugo barrel and parts PERFECTLY. Where's the pics BigAl???

Were you following BlindHogg's instructions? He lists 5 lbs of lye to the 2.5 lbs of Soda Nitrate. It sounds like the ingrediant percentages are very flexible.
