just ordered gunkote in AK Black. I'm going to do one over park and one over blast. I'll let you know. the blast one was a crummy duracote job. It wasn't prepped properly and now its chipping

What kind of AK? Do you want it to look original?

I will be trying my hand at rust bluing for an AK build this spring.

The best Bulgarian type finish can be made with a few light coats of Rustoleum wrinkle finish, followed by a 1 hour bake at 375 degrees in a toaster oven.

How close is it? I built a krinkov kit, taped off the receiver from the barrel, painted it all up and once baked and assembled, it matched everything else, top cover and all. The only work required after the bake and cool is take a piece of oil covered cotton and rub the finish with a little force to smooth down the slightly rough surface of the new paint. This will also darken the finish a little.

Paint (GunKote flat black) over park with a slice of lemon.

It won't be completely flat once you spray on coat of oil.

    Did I do that?

Is there any way to prep for gunkote without a sandblaster?

There's a product called k-phos thats supposed to work. Others have used navel jelly, but the best is by using a sand blaster. I used a cheap $20 walmart one with home depot play sand until I got a blasting cabinet.

Thanks for the suggestion. I guess I'm off to walmarts soon.

I've had a can of Gunkote Gold & a can of Gunkote stainless for a couple years.
One of these days I'm going to pimp one out.

I also have a red, white & blue laminated wood stock blank from Boyd's. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm.....

Just got a can of gunkote AK black and can't wait to get my new rifle done.
As far as skipping the blast, at prices of AK kits now I wouldn't skip it.
I made a micro blasting system out of a water filtration housing some pvc and 3/8 clear tubing from Home Depot. Cut the top of a large rubbermaid bin and put a clear plastic top on. Put a compact flourescent light in and a fan and viola a blast cabinet. I use a running .5 hp compressor (you have to wait alot but what the heck you only have to do it once ...or more if you like building)
I admit I am going to get a bigger compressor -for other reasons but it worked fine for the first couple of builds.
