i have been looking more and more at the 7.62x54r round and there are some reall good wild cats out there as well as some factory rounds based on it. a 6.5x54R woud be a excelent round it would likely out perform the 260 remington. A bull barrel on one of these would shoot well I have no doubts.
as far as the floating gas tube The set up I have on my varmit build just lays in a slot in the gas block and also just layes in the RSB its held in with a allen screw through a tab welded on it. one could also just rigidly attach the tube to the rsb and align it to the FSB and have a gap between the parts. a simple chamfer will allow the the piston to go in. I still have the weight of the pistion sitting on the barrel but It seems to be very accurate. I was thinking of a gas system like the AR with a gas tube running to a shorter pistion that is clear back at the RSB. the line can be flexiable some how. It may be a step backward in reliabilty but it might be more accurate. them AR,s get pretty damm accurate.
also keep in mind that if the barrel is to big were it goes through the manditory modified RSB it will interfer with the botttom of the gas tube were it sets down in the block .
krebs has GB,s that will allow a oversize barrel BTW
the lower hand guard can be floated by suporting it with a brace from the reciver to the guard. leave off the front munting stuff. I wood guard with a rod run inside of it likely could be made that went into a plate set inside the reciver is doable as well if you wanted it to look stock. my next build my have a round aluminum or carbon fiber tube that looks simular to a AR float tube. Im going to incorperate the mount into the spaace between the trunion and the bottom of the reciver.
