If this is what you want then I'd just look for a barrel about twice the wall thickness of the original.
If looks don't matter and you have access to a machine shop, then the sky (and your budget) is the limit.

I would like to keep the same caliber but it does seem the .308 would offer more choice. I would really like to keep the rifle looking as close to the original look as possible but I do understand that the completed rifle wont quite look like the original design.
Im not to savvy on reloading rifle rounds just shotgun shells so I guess I will be learning real quick.
This brings me to the next question. Would the mags,bolt, ejector also have to be modified or can a .308 round be loaded into the 54 cartridge
