Cholera is serious bad juju, probably the #3 killer after bubonic plague and "the Influenza" of 1918... and it has hit much of the industrialized world (including the USA, Canada, Britain, and France) in the 19th and 20th century. For some reason you hear very little about it.
Cholera has a complex life cycle that depends partly on fresh water being contaminated with sewage, which is hard to avoid entirely when the water table and water demand are both high. If you're "in the hills" you probably won't breed your own, but if the guys in the wetlands develop it and start moving your way, you need to know this stuff.
