In the 2012 legislative session, HB 3560/SB 3002, the NRA-initiated Safe Commute Act, and HB 3559/SB 2992, the Firearm Discrimination Prevention Act, were killed by Republican legislative leaders in the state House and Senate. Putting the anti-self-defense interests of big business ahead of the safety of individual Tennesseans who possess a handgun carry permit, these leaders prevented an open and fair vote on the House and Senate floors. This is particularly shameful in light of the fact that both bills passed through their committees of jurisdiction with overwhelming support.
