They were asking for proposals for this back in the late 1980s, before the technology was even practical. News articles about that and similar things were common when I first started reading the comp.risks newsgroup 20 years ago.
Did you know various airports and bus stations have had facial recognition setups since the 1990s? It was no secret, but nobody wanted to know. I'd tell people about things like that, and people would just give me the pitying look, like I'd just claimed to have beamed down from the mothership. Then the Patriot Act went in, and people were calling me up in a panic, asking me if I'd heard about this or that provision. Yep, told you about that five|ten|fifteen years ago; all the Patriot Act did was tie everything up with a neat little bow; there wasn't anything new other than putting it all under the same umbrella.
Game, set, match, all done years ago. Y'all stuck your heads in the sand and didn't want to hear about it until it was far too late. Now I'm the one sending the pitying looks.
