I used 5.45 mags, and epoxied a .223 case (filled with epoxy) to the follower, that and shortened the follower a bit to still get 30 rounds in. Worked great for me. Have you tried this method? I liked it because the mags used to be cheap and plentiful, and easy to mod to fit the chinese .223 AKs that I had a boatload of. Oh, and the bolt holds open after the last round as well.
