im not looking for anything that is top notch museum quality or anything like that. just a 30.06 garand that is in presentable shape that shoots straight.

i've seen them from $400 to $1500..depending on the condition..most of the ones i've seen in the 400 dollar range would probably need rebarreled to shoot a nice tight group..
I paid 500.00 for mine recently.

get one from the CMP........you'd be a fool if pay anything more then the CMP prices......if you are up for a trip, you can drive to camp perry, port clinton, oh and hand pick one out yourself......that is what I did, found A H&R with a MW 1 and TE 1........while you are there, pick out a nice 1903 or a A3 as well, they also sell LC 30-06 ammo there as well........it's well worth the trip

you have to belong to a CMP affliated club......check the site for all CMP recognized clubs, http://clubs.odcmp.com/cgi-bin/clubSearch.cgi you probably belong to one already and don't even know it.......like the OGCA, VFW, etc...
read this carefully, and bring the approperate paperwork......

It's like anything else in collecting.
Condition, condition, condition.
Condition and price seems to revolve around matching parts (many still great Garands are mixmasters, some of the higher end ones are not), throat erosion and the condition of the stock and cartouche.
Of course, the more pristine it is, the less likely it is that it saw action.
