View Full Version : 2 MG-42 Questions

1. The recuperator. How can I be sure that I need to trim the receiver for it to fit? Is it as simple as placing in the receiver and testing, or is there a process to verify it will fit? My receiver has that tab on the back that sticks up on the LH side, and I think I need to trim this. I looked till I was crosseyed and I can't find any pics that show this area that has been trimmed for the recuperator.
2. G3 trigger parts. I played around with my G3 trigger housing all night tonight and I think this would work. The HK housing is wider than the MG grip stick, but there is enough meat on the parts that they could be thinned out. I think they would be thinned out and could be fitted into the grip stick. It would take some work but I think it is possible... no?

I havent had to trim the rec for the recoup to fit in any of my 42's but I did have to cut a hole in the recoup for the fa bolt blocking pin to stick thru. with the clearance hole for that bolt blocking stud the recoup should drop right in. with the front stud out of the recoup the sqaure window should line up with the hole in rec on the left side. The other mod to the rcoup is when viewed from the rear in firing position you have to cut about 1/8 inch of hieght off the right hand upright at the rear so the cocking lug welded on the semi bolt can clear.
I think Pirate or gunslingerdoc on the 42 group was working with the g3 fcg last year. I have had 100% success with the arfcg in my alum grip housing , unmodified ar hammer and hammer spring has ignited every .308 and 8mm I have run across

1. the recuperator has mounting holes, one in the front and one in the rear, measure the distance and see if they match or put the recouperator in the receiver and see if it fits.
2. the g3 fcg is not really the best choice for several reasons. the fal fcg fits and works nicely.

Jerry, I had an interesting time with that:
I believe that tab you're speaking of is the piece the recoup goes underneath. It wedges in tightly. There's a mounting block at the rear that goes through the bottom of the receiver and there is the spring-loaded threaded pin which goes through the side wall at the front.

I am unclear on the tab the recoup goes under, In all mine the recoup sits on top of the buffer reatining tab thats part of the gstick mount and has a raised relief pressed in to clear. the only thing I see that the recoup fits under is the left hand rail. Explain the tab the recoup goes under incase I have something assembled incorrectly. Pic would be great

OOPS forget I asked, I am using rec from BRP, no tab, just looked in a transferable german 42 and I see it

Thanks, guys! I'm going to trim it to clear the FA stud and see where that leaves me. Should be OK.
So Pirate (or anyone) what makes the G3 a bad idea? Is it a functionally issue or simply too difficult? I have the "why climb Everest" syndrome - I'm unable to do things the "easy way" so if it is too damn hard, I'll do it just to see if I can.
My thoughts on the FCG are to follow the FA-to-SA conversion method (clip & pin etc.) then use that as a model to modify the grip stick housing. Trim/grind parts thinner as needed, and call it good. Am I asking for trouble?

It has been several months since I did my search for a good fcg for the conversion and from what I remember of the g3 is that it is to tall and the distance between the hammer and trigger pins is to long. It was not a fcg that lent itself to the project. If you are looking for a project, go for it, but it seems you have picked the worst fcg to start with. an sks or m1 carbine would be better if you feel you need to tinker. one of the advantages to the fal fcg is that it retains the exterior profile of the grip stick.

Thanks, Pirate. I'll probably just do the FAL thing since it's a proven design. I was excited because I thought I'd finally found a use for this G3 trigger pack. Oh well.
I may do the G3 mod on my 2nd one, don't know yet.
