If you have a 9x20" lathe with a 0.78" hole through the headstock spindle, what is the longest 1" barrel blank you can turn? I mean is it really going to be 20" or is it more like 17-18"?

If it has a steadyrest to support the far end of the bbl you could, in theory, chuck up the bbl and let the free end ride in the steadyrest. The big factor is the bed long enough to let the saddle (and tool!) go out far enough to reach the end of the bbl?
Far easier and better to get something with a large enough spindle bore to let the bbl pass through, and enough bed length to have a bit longer travel than you think you will ever need.
I think, other than cost, you would be far happier with the bigger lathe.

Thanks Kernel, I went ahead and bought it. Its an enco 9x20 with 10hrs on it and it came with a stand 3 and 4 jaw chucks , face plate, 2 steady rests (2 and 3 point), gears and stuff for $550. I haven't touched a lathe in 20 years and have never used a steady rest. If I'm still farting around with this one and its not big enough I'll go ahead and get the bigger one down the road.
