View Full Version : Rhodesian FAL Questions

I'm thinking about doing a coonan build on one of my kits. The question I have is what kind of receiver is correct for a Rhodesian FAL? I found some pics of Rhody FALs but I can't figure which type of receiver?

Type 1 receivers were mostly made before about 1962 I think. The type 2 receivers were the replacement across the board for new metric receivers until the type 3's came out. I think the combo flash hider came in 1964. Rhodesian FAL's are standard Belgian made metric receivers. Argentina did help fill orders for FN Belgium but they were marked as Belgian made and were exactly the same. It really depends when the rifle was made. Here's a pick of a shiny new type 2 in Rhodesia.

I agree with the type II. The UN embargo started in 1965 and ran to 1979. Type IIIs were made starting in 1973. I also think type IIs are the best from a purely asthetic point of view.

Well good because I prefer the Type 2 receivers. I have no idea how to date a kit, but they have the combo flash hiders and grenade launcher attachments.
OK riddle me this - does Coonan only sell Type 1 receivers? I can't find anything else on his website?

This is a type 1.
Coonan Inc. FAL Receivers (http://www.dancoonan.com/)
I think it might only be type 1's.
Is your FAL kit Rhodesian or South African? are there any receiver stubs? Also look at lower for shape where it meets the upper.

I have been told that there is almost nothing that would not be considered "correct" for a rhodie due to there using whatever parts whenever they needed them, so mismatched lowers to receivers would not be considered a party foul
