View Full Version : The Sportsman's Guide sucks!

This company has always been a slight pain in the Ass to deal with. Sometimes I order something and then get a, "Well its on back order we will send it next month". I take that for what its worth suck it up and drive on. Today they screwed up and gave me sh*t about it. Ordered 500rds of 7.62x39 FMJ. They sent 240 HP and 260 FMJ. So I called and got a complete run around. The first person I talked with was rude and acted like she didn't care or know what the heck I was talking about. Called to another number I was told to take pictures of the wrong ammo and send it to firstname.lastname@example.org email account. I can understand one 20 rd box of the wrong round, but half the order?!? I will not buy from The Sportsman's Guide anymore!

Sometimes they have good deals. But almost every time I purchase surplus clothing and order either an XL or 2XL I receive something between medium and large. I call and ask for a return shipping label and they send it so all I'm out is my time. Ask for a manager in customer service and they usually make it right.

I essentially stopped dealing with them in 2000 due to their policy of not shipping ammo to my Zip Code. Even though I got letters from the Chief of Police, the DA, and the Sheriff that stated that this was not a violation of any laws. You just can't fix stupid....

Occassionally they have a good deal on something but the majority of items are cheaper elsewhere (even when listed as "on sale"). I combine my membership discount, the CC discount and a coupon or free shipping to get a slight deal. The last one was a case of 7.62x54R with a "free shipping" code and still got charged $10 on shipping for "heavy item charge". However, you can usually find items cheaper somewhere else.

I,ve quit doing buness with them years ago, they'll poon ya on shipping, plus the backorder thing also, they pulled that on me even after I called on avalibility. Better resorces out there than them. Cheaper than Dirt is getting bad too, shipping cost wise, I'd done allot with them in the past till this started. Here's an example, 10 M-16 mag pouchs @ .50 ea, shipping $23 something????? WHAT????? Hell I can get 2 guns shipped from Century for that, @12.50 ea.

They do suck!

yep, SMG sucks most of the time.
back in the day they were pretty good.
now they went all NASDEC -stock-market. they sell a lot of china-JUNK not fit for even an AIR-SOFT mall-ninja.
they make you jump through all kinds of hoops to get a reasonable price on anything--then gig the shit out of you for shipping. if i get asked for $30 to join a CLUB? --WTF?? LOL!
and they all ways find a way to fuck-up and order. i guess those illegal aliens they got packing the boxes can't read english???
if you don't want a hassle and have to deal with some PITA policies you better look elsewhere.

They used to be OK, I think the last thing I bought from them was 2 cases of AK ammo in Wolf brand. IIRC, it was around $86 each, delivered. Tells ya how long since I've ordered!

I bought my 1928a Thompson kit from them years ago, paid with a Postal money order.Weeks went by w/ nary a word. I called, they said something about it didnt have a cleaning rod as advertized, they were waiting for them to come in,would I like it sent without one? Yes please. Another 2-3 weeks. Called them. "We are waiting on the money order to clear." I said "Its a postal money order, treated same as cash the world over." He said they had a shoebox full of bad money orders and was their policy to wait till they cleared. Once again I said POSTAL MONEY ORDER, I bet youve never had a bad one. Then I got pissed, said look if u dont have them in stock, just tell me and quit jerking me around. How long does it take for a m.o. to clear? Its been like 8 weeks now, send the damn thing! Then I hung up. 12 weeks from when I put the order in the mail,it arrived. I really think they were out of stock and didnt want me to cancel and get it somewhere else. Jeez!

I have been taking advantage of free shipping codes to buy ammo and collectable items from SMG. Once had a Barska AR-15 scope come apart two years ago and when I finally located the original packing slip, the scope was returned for credit and they honored their lifetime satisfaction guarantee.
My experience in buying military surplus clothing has been similar to the other postings. What they sometimes list as Large is actually labelled "medium" on the garment--in the language of the country of origin. A Swiss rain parka was labelled "Mittel/Moyen" (medium), though listed as Large. They also pro-rate the larger sizes sometimes. My guess is they determine sizes by applying a direct measurement.
One beef I have is that they won't ship a BB/pellet gun to my state. Saw some really cool/collectable pellet guns (military surplus) in their catalogs but it broke my heart that they wouldn't sell me one. Atlanta Cutlery had the same Polish pellet pistol SMG had, but by the time I found out they were sold out. I once had to go to Natchez Shooters Supply to buy the same Gamo rifle that SMG wouldn't sell to me.
However, SMG fills a void left when the local surplus store closed down. I don't need to drive 50 miles (one way) to buy military surplus goods.

second post about smg
I have never had a problem with them, yep euro sizing is tough to get right, if you collect euro camo like I do, regardless who I get it from ,its usually off a bit. a while back SMG had west german flectarn parkas with liners for $24 to members, I bought about 5-8 sets all but one was under sized I gave away as a gift
the compliants here are the same regardless who you deal with whether its natchez, brownels, cheaper than dirt, CDNN, midway etc any of the advertisers from shotgun news, they all drop the ball, the biggest all time offender is Sarco, second is Numrich(gunparts)
going to gunshow can eliminate this, as it is front of you. yep its more money but its in front of you
on the ammo thing bellson keeps bringiing up
most ammo comapnys will not ship to certain states midway will not ship to NJ or NY smg will, smg will not ship ammo to cali but others do, its their policy I can go on & on, best answer is to move out of NJ, NY and Cali, Illinois, Mass. and maryland. it America they ship to who and where they choose

i have heard that jane fonda, rosie o donnel, and janet reno OWN SMG now? WTH__LOL!

Whem Gary Olen owned the business things were great. Goos prices, & shiped on time. You could even talk to the man via letter or phone. That was back in the 80's tho. I haven't done business with them since the company was sold, to the French, I heard. No wonder they have problems!

Sportsman's guide pulled a bait & switch on. They advertised 80s factory Yugo ammo
but what I got was a mix of dates with extensive green corrosion. They wouldn't take
it back & no refund. Never buy from them again.

They do have issues presently.
I am disgusted with their marketing ploys.
I have been happily surprised in the past when they would ship
quality parts kits as advertised.
Yeah, I think they have a warehouse full if illegals trying to fill orders.
Probably one of them speaks English, and he's in complete adrenal exhaustion.

Myself and two friends ordered scopes from them a few years ago and on the first outing with them one of the adjustments broke. I sent it back and they replaced it no charge to me. That's my only experience with SMG and its been a few years.

Ordered Polish parkas from the recent SMG Military Surplus catalog and they went on backorder. When they arrived this week, they had shipped Czech parkas mislabled as Polish. Entirely different camouflage pattern. Called customer service and they're sending return postage, but now gun-shy about ordering similar items in the future.

Different twist with SMG here! They advertised Polish Armour's boxes for $89.00 & then switched the prices to $130.00 (or very close to that price)! A member complained & got a code for the $89.00 price, then posted it here for other members! I ordered 3 boxes & got them for the $89.00 price in excellant condition. This is one of the win situations that is not the norm by any means. Remember the Balkan mag deals years ago; cheap great stuff til they figured out they were way under charging for it....pulled the ads & stock; then relisted it for much more money! Russian collectable mags, Bosnian Fleur Di Leis mags, NEW Yugo BHO mags & the list goes on! Those were the days of collecting that are long gone!

As soon as they see a sales spike, there seems to be a knee-jerk reaction price spike.
Much more expedient to sell in volume, make the turn around and buy more
good stuff. We are still of a capitalism mindset I think, we expect loyalty and in
return will give it back.
I do like the M85 kit package they offer.
I'd order one, but just don't have the funds.
03-09-2012, 09:53 PM
"I'd order one, but just don't have the funds." Gotta love that FOUR PAY plan SG has though!! Heh...Heh..
I'd order a M85 but they all seem to be in .223???? I don't do that shit.
03-09-2012, 10:03 PM
Four pay plan, so there is a way.
03-09-2012, 10:12 PM
But do you get four mags as in description? Or five like in picture??
03-09-2012, 10:28 PM
Only an optimist would expect 5 mags in this deal.
A realist expects 3.5

No more Sportsmans Guide CC discount? Damn, I ordered some ammo, used a coupon and my SPG credit card and no 3% CC discount. I guess that is over. I usually find better deals elsewhere anymore but they used to have some decent sales. Too bad.
