Here is some of the barrels Ive done over the winter.

Here are a couple more I had to resize to post.
Many thanks for the one you did for me!

Your most welcome.Have you got that pup up and running yet?
Its been up...... no chance to run it. My son was going to take it out last week but I chickened out, and had tell him no. I was afraid he was going to cook the barrel, he has been known to do that, more than once.

I've gotta boy like that-- giving him a gun and 1000 rounds I'm likely to get neither back.
Droog--Wondered what folks did up there in winter!!
They look good. Did you drill the ports at .125?

LOOKS Nice...wanna sell one??? What would a whole unit like that go for from you?? IF someone just buys it outright? And if they supply the parts? Thanks.
PM me please, I will be off and on the board infrequently for a few days. Thanks

None of these are mine I did them for other people with their parts.I drill my holes with either a #31 bit or a 7/64 or a 1/8 what ever is closest to my hand .I havent noticed any difference in any of them betwen 8"-10" barrels .

thats cool as hell! whats the smallest youve done?
05-15-2005, 01:53 AM
Very good work. Any problems with the GB hole?
05-15-2005, 11:53 AM
No problems with the hole size. The shortest I ve gone is the first one of the pics that one is 8" long. I made one for me and it runs fine and really throws out a fireball.

The above pic is when I first finished the gun and havent made the handguard yet or painted it yet.I have sense made the handguard and painted it but havent welded a front site to the gasblock yet.But will soon and then Ill have to refinish it again. Oh well I need the practice. I just found a really neat airbrush yesterday and Im dying to try it out.

Very cool droog.

Now THATS what Im talkin about....Make one of those bad boys and use an SKS magazine welded on, along with relocating the notches in the upper rails slightly and modding the bolt carrier slightly along with adding a "blocking bar" 2nd centersupport over the FCG, to prevent a regular AK carrier going in, then you'd have a CA legal 10rd pistol w/perm. attached magazine. Load it w/bolt closed by turning upside down, swing open mag and stack 10rds in. Sounds like a good by-the-bed gun to me LOL !!!! On a related note: Im Still waiting on DOJ letter for OK to build CA pistols...I sent OG one May 7th, it got lost, sent a new one 3 days ago. It actually never got sent I believe, since I used a small mail place not PO, they took my $$$ and tossed it in trash can I bet....
DROOG: I want one :) All I need is the front pieces. I suppose I really just need a BBL as the rest is standard AK or slightly modified...Use a standard gas block and Ill weld sight on. Uses standard rear sight block/trunnion, I can do that too...shorter gas tube/piston, I can do those (well buy shorter piston) as well... SO I think DROOG should start taking shitty and surplus BBLs and cutting them down to 8" and selling them ready to go, OR better yet sell them w/gas block installed and hole drilled...Thats the hardest part of a short pistol like that :).... Comeon man, I bet you would sell at least 25 a month....

Droog, can you show us how you did it? I would like to try to make a short barreled pistol like the one pictured above.

Welcome DoL--This is Droog's thread and he's much better than I am, but I'll share a Ga redneck's method.
Cut it with a hacksaw. Square in a mill. Form the crown with a round stone in a dremel then finish it with a brass headed round bolt.

I was wondering how you move the gas block. Does the hole in the barrel need to be the same size? How do you make the gas tube fit after it's been cut? Shortening a barrel is easy if you don't have to mess with the gas system, but I would like to be able to relocate the gas block toward the rear when I make my pistol.

you redrill the hole for the gas block and cut/flare an original gas tube

What I have been doing is I first strip the barrel down till all thats on it is the rear site block because it will still chuck up in the lathe with that on. Next I cut the barrel off with a chop saw about 1/2 " longer than what the finished length will be.I then turn the steps for the retainer the gasbock and front site and the threaded end last cut it to the finallength and recrown and thread the front then I line up the gas port with the center of the rear site and mark and drill with a #31 bit.I then take the dremel and grind the little nubs off the inside of the retainer and slide it on the barrel next I grease up the gasblock line it up and press on drill aand pin and that is about all for the barrel. I then line up the tube and mark it and cut it and reflare the end.Put carreier in and measure for gas piston then PM Hotbarrel for a custom made piston.

I dont have a lathe so I cant cut the retainer steps and gasblock steps, I can do all the rest of it myself. Interested in doing it Droog??? Thanks

i was gonna send some parts over to droog to do one for me but decided to put my lathe to work and give it a try, not sure if i can get the whole gas hole and all the goodies working but if worse come's to worse i will send some parts over. when you guy's redrill the gas port do you make it slanted like the original or just straight up? im working with an amd parts set so its just like the first one posted, any other pointers?
06-01-2005, 09:50 PM
It doesnt matter if you slant it or not the gas will find its way to where it is supposed to go.I have done them both ways.I use a angle vise on a drill press. If you gonna go at a slant use the shortest bit you can to at least start the hole.

Thanks droog, ima give it a try and see what i come up with, i think we discussed this in pm and the shortest you can go is 8inches and that is welding the site to the gasblock correct?

Those are some nice barrels Droog. And I like that flame off of your pistol!

Someone e-mailed me and said he has got one even as short as 6 1/2" to run so I dont think 8" is carved in stone .
