I have had a 10-22 my dad gave to me for my 21st birthday WAY back in the day. It is a limited edition three-color laminated stock. Compared to the "normal" 2-color laminate that Ruger sells, it looks extremely nice.
I'm thinking about building (or buying) my wife a target 10-22 so we can do some cheap plinking and hunting together.
So a few questions:
1. Does anyone have any idea if there are 10-22 receiver blueprints? Are there BIY 10-22s out there? The receiver is small enough that I think I could machine one with relative ease.
2. Is .17 HMR worth the extra cash? I've always been a fan of the .22LR for small game stuff, but after reading up on the HMR here and elsewhere I'm starting to wonder if it may be worth the extra cost. We have a good thread here about it:

I've found these two styles in the colors that she really likes:

I think the ronduras(?) site (who ever it was also sold ar15 castings) has a receiver casting you can buy and I imagine they would have the blueprints also. I looked into this last fall as I was wanting to convert a 22mag ruger 10/22 rifle to 17hmr. The problem I ran across is since they no longer produce the 10/22 mag rifle they have gone up in price where it wasn't worth it. I then looked at making my own receiver from a 80% one but I couldn't find one made in the magnum length and made from steel. I did look at the 22lr receiver kits and since you still have to buy the bolt/trigger group it was still cheaper to buy a complete gun. I called ruger and they wouldn't say if they had plans to bring back the 22mag version of the 10/22.
They are a neat little platform to build on. Kinda like a small block Chevy, there are tons of aftermarket parts available.
I did one up a couple of years ago. I went to wally world bought a 10/22 brought it home and stripped down to the bare receiver.
I replaced all the internals with parts from Power Custom and Volquartsen. I used a carbon fiber bull barrel and plastic stock with built in fold up bi-pod. It weighs practically nothing and is pretty damn accurate.
I still have an unfired barrel, stock and all internals that I would sell if someone wants to freshen up an old one.

The cost of the 17 hmr-2 for plinking is the draw back for me. yes its more accurate/faster but IMOA the fun of the 10-22 is the low cost of shooting it.
like mole man I would like to have a 10-22MAG to convert to the better 17 HMR but the prices are crazy now for them. I wanted it for praire dog hunting so ammo costs were a bit more justifilable over just plinking. Rugger is missing the boat on not coming out with a 10-17hmr and dropping the 10-22mag IMOA. There is now a 10-22 pistol that I hope to buy before next spring. I shot a HMR 2 a lot and keeping the barrel clean is more difficulet over a 22 LR and I suspect the Mach 2 would be the same.

They do, but you must be a paying member to see them.

I suppose I could measure the 10/22 parts from my existing rifle as the blueprint. I have realized that I could build the receiver from aluminum! Looks like NDS has aluminum receivers they are selling. I could therefore probably build it from milder steel than the 4340 block I have in the shop. I would want to try that for the sole purpose that the NDS aluminum receiver must be anodized to ensure the raw aluminum doesn't wear down, and I don't have an anodizing setup.

They truly are "everything rimfire" these guys are extremely knowledgeable about the rimfire rifles and can tell you alot!
I own a Marlin/Glenfield Model 60 .22 repeater and the Marlin HM2(mach 2) .17.
Although I love them both, I must agree with 1BIGGUN. with the .17 it is SUPER FAST and SUPER ACCURATE, but also costly to shoot for plinking. Plus the .17 gr bullet is easily affected by even slight wind at long distances and loses much of its (limited) knockdown power after 100yds.
With that being said, I actually enjoy shooting the .17 MORE than the .22!
The recoil is SLIGHTLY better(since its' a bolt action, not a repeater) and the report is no louder than the .22lr(just crisper).
You are in Williamsburg, right? I live about 1.5 hours north of you. If you want to get together, we can blast the .17 so that you can see if you like it?
